Protection talismans are also good for defense, but even on max rank they come at the price of 5 capacity.
Personally I also use Extraction Talismans because I am using golden gourd set + soul cores with amrita absorb bonuses
Oh and considering another talisman besides electric to use when someone is resistant to it , however it is the best element out of them all overall IMO.
Protection is situationally great, can stave off a ton of damage when fighting against those that hit weak and fast and those that hit slow and super hard. Pair with decree during coop or with an NPC, and there's a chance you'll come out of some sticky situations unscathed. Same with the projectile repel in harder difficulties (when enemies shoot twice as fast).
Rejuvenation with decree is great when you're trying to keep stuff alive longer (like certain mischievous NPCs) or during coop. It's anecdotal but while Oasis is faster (which is why I fielded it often in Nioh 1), I find way more elixirs in Nioh 2, so I never use it, but it might work for you.
I tend to have an extra slot set just for onmyo consisting of Sloth, an attack/utility spell like Guardian, lightning bolt, debuff, or offensive buff, a defensive buff like Gust/Protection, and then Rejuvenation.
Steel, heal and KI boost are standard for me same goes for fire and lightning attack.
Others just when needed like fire or lightning stop talisman for some bosses maybe.
I heard good things about life seal versus annoying human bosses but I never used it myself.
Onmyo:
- Extraction talisman (Ability for attacks to create amrita, useful when you have effects that trigger on amrita absorption such as healing, attack up etc)
- Barrier Talisman (KI regen increases massively, pretty much trivialises KI management when it's active)
- Archyokai Talisman (Increases anima generation helping to use more soul core spam / burst countering etc)
- Rejuvenation (Heal overtime effect, useful when stacking other healing effects along side it to maintain high HP bar at all times, especially when paired up with Honda clan or Oyamatsumi 5p.)
- Familiar talismans (These become even better in end game when you have a star effect ''Sloth on onmyo hit'' on one of your accessories, you pop it up and go in melee, they inflict their respective elemental damage and stacks the specific elemental debuff while allowing you to attack in melee, dodge, block etc)
- Carnage + Steel Talisman (With 200 points into Magic stat carnage gives you around 25% melee damage increase but drops your defense by 20%, Steel talisman gives you 20% defense, so using Carnage along side with Steel takes the negative side effect of Carnage)
- Gust Talisman (reflects ranged attacks back to it's attacker, this can be a life saver if some ranged enemy tries to shoot you in the back)
- Purification Talisman (because purity is king and no one cannot escape it's debuff)
- Guardian Spirit talisman (Perfect way to force a specific elemental debuff)
- Fire/Water/Lightning Stop Talisman (Specific elemental resistance, getting saturated or electrified is bad and god forbid if you get Confuse debuffed you will not have a good time)
Ninjutsu:
- Quick-Change Scoll (you take an entire shopping cart of these with you when you go adventuring, 2nd chances are always good)
The reason why I decided to just mention these specific Jutsus is because these are the ones that my main build has equipped, running Tsukuyomi 7p and inheriting Untouched Onmyo on all armor pieces and temper that on both accessories and having it on a Scroll means they almost never get used up and when they do, I just go hit some melee attacks and get it back.
Edit: And speaking of Tsukuyomi, hitting enemies with Onmyo magic gives them Weakness, meaning they take more damage from melee. And if you have star effect on one of your accessories ''Sloth on onmyo magic hit'' means your enemies will be slowed aswell.
Imma use more Omnyo from now on, having a blast with it!
Im trying to fit all of the best Omnyo in the shortcuts lol
During my days as a spear/onmyo hybrid, I leaned on Barrier + an elemental familiar, separate from my weapon's element / active skill element / yokai skill element.
I also liked Devigorate to apply after the enemy shifted into yokai realm / dark realm.
If you're going for a jutsu-centric run, then shots and shikigami. You may have to die at least one try or retreat from battle after you find out what the boss is resistant to, then reslot the spells. Note: Your gear's highest level and +value also affect your spell's damage / ninjutsu's damage. So it's still worth it to upgrade.
This gets harder to do at higher difficulties without having to go into melee, using empowered onmyo with melee, incorporating ninjutsu, incorporating yokai skills, or using sacred brushes.
