Enabling crossplay makes us use our epic account instead, so having to be friends on Epic makes perfect sense. We will give it a shot tomorrow.
What is even lamer is that steam only users now have a reduced matchmaking pool. Not only that, but as time goes by things will arguably get even worse for them.
While having to make an Epic Games account isn't something inherently bad, the way this is "forced" seems fishy and it looks like by Koei Tecmo tries to favour EGS over Steam for whatever business reason.
This game is done, has been done for years. They made very little compared to console on porting it over to Steam, and they managed to patch in DLSS, added better K&M support, patched that to display keyboard symbols in game, and fixed some issues, and some other things. I was grateful for the patches and though it was truly the last patching for the game, and they patched in the ability to use the Epic crossplay network. Part of why I think was to provide Epic players with a bigger player base and win points with Epic to gain some subs, but the result was a bigger multiplayer pool for the game for people who bought it on Steam, and a better chance of extended multiplayer server support now that it is released on Epic and can use there multiplayer service.
Almost anything can be done better, and I don't think its wrong to point out what you think could be done better, but this is a win. Its free, its optional, and extends the life of the game. That is a win.
