Crossplay Notes
Not addressing the pros and cons of joining Epic; I joined to get free games. Yes, I know about it being spyware, yes Tencent is straight up CCP run, but do you have Facebook, Twitch, etc... installed on your computer or phone? Much worse spyware than Epic is commonly used everywhere; I don't have any social media account at all, expect for games, and I mitigate the risk by boot partitions. Do what you like, but here are my observations;

1. You can change back and forth between Steam and Epic networks on the fly in the game or in a mission, takes a few seconds to switch. If you do this, switch back and forth to find players, you obviously have a higher chance to find someone, as you can access both player pools. The issue that you can only connect to other crossplay players while in crossplay does not matter much, as switching is trivial.

2. I have no idea if you can see how many players are in a particular game on Epic, but I had about equal success getting players using Steam and Epic.

3. The connection we good on Epic; I did not detect any bad lag, and I never disconnected.

4. I think there are more high level players on Steam, more low level players on Epic, but I got good players in Way of the Demon on both networks, around level 230.

5. If you want to play the game and have an optimal player population to play with, enabling Epic and switching freely is the way to go, and I think this will be more so in the future as the game gets older.

Hope this helps,
P.

Not sure, have not tested that in particular. Are you friended on Epic? Don't think that's necessary, but I thought I'd ask. Are you in the same geographic region?

Enabling crossplay makes us use our epic account instead, so having to be friends on Epic makes perfect sense. We will give it a shot tomorrow.

Let us know, I don't have friends on Epic or I would test this out myself. I'm interested because I want a player base and game server supported for this game as long as possible, I don't care where (this is one of the best games I have ever played)

I do not care about spyware. But this is not crossplay. Why the heck I should choose between Steam and EGS? They should implemented it better that I could see all games for both EGS and Steam instead of switching this crappy crossplay all the time

I agree with you, that's actually lame, why would we play with those who enable crossplay only, and we can't connect to steam players who didn't enable crossplay, as you said mate this is no crossplay we need it to be free out bounds where you can play with everyone Steam or EGS doesn't matter.

You are right. This is not true crossplay.

What is even lamer is that steam only users now have a reduced matchmaking pool. Not only that, but as time goes by things will arguably get even worse for them.

While having to make an Epic Games account isn't something inherently bad, the way this is "forced" seems fishy and it looks like by Koei Tecmo tries to favour EGS over Steam for whatever business reason.

They define crossplay as being able to play across platforms, Steam and Epic. Of course. on PC, 'platforms' are artificial limitations between corps to gain advantage, but If you don't consider it so, that that is crossplay, then even in the case of all steam and epic players seeing each other without have to switch between discreet networks, then it still isn't crossplay because you can't see console users. Feel lucky that a game a few years after it is finished as far as production, added another way for you to play multiplayer. I don't see how you could complain about that really.

It's not perfect, but you can play with everybody, both with crossplay enabled users, and non-enabled Steam players right now. I do it everytime I play, all I have to do is switch networks, which takes a few seconds, if I don't see players.

I think the developers wanted to have Steam players not be stuck with the diminishing player pool which is happening with or without the crossplay option. Does it speed it up? Only if you choose not to enable crossplay. Is that pressure to enable it? Yes. Will it allow you to have people to play with longer in the products lifetime? Yes.

You can play with your steam friend that doen't wont EGS junk and friend who got it in EGS because it cheaper there. Can you play with both of them? And yes, now they ask you to create EGS account, then they will ask you to link you credit card and then they will put data miner in your launcher. They could do this better if they wished to do so you may see how KT treats their customers

I've had an Epic account for about a year. I have about 30 free games, and I was never asked for my credit card. Do I trust Epic? No. But I got the account to take the free games, and I would NEVER buy anything from them. If they ask for a credit card at some point, I would not give it to them, but so far so good.

This game is done, has been done for years. They made very little compared to console on porting it over to Steam, and they managed to patch in DLSS, added better K&M support, patched that to display keyboard symbols in game, and fixed some issues, and some other things. I was grateful for the patches and though it was truly the last patching for the game, and they patched in the ability to use the Epic crossplay network. Part of why I think was to provide Epic players with a bigger player base and win points with Epic to gain some subs, but the result was a bigger multiplayer pool for the game for people who bought it on Steam, and a better chance of extended multiplayer server support now that it is released on Epic and can use there multiplayer service.

Almost anything can be done better, and I don't think its wrong to point out what you think could be done better, but this is a win. Its free, its optional, and extends the life of the game. That is a win.

After adding each other on our EGS friends list and we indeed managed to play together.
