I think against humans, it could be tricky to pull off, but once you do, a mix of the head shot damage and final blow damage to get through a fight.
The last major time I tried a ranged build, I found that it could not sustain in scrolls with multiple bosses or Depths with multiple bosses, but sufficient for at least defeating one boss. At least, without resorting to melee heavily and at the time, had few benefits toward melee.
Although I've also stayed away from ranged builds due to both my gamepad(s) not having precise enough controls to aim and my own limited dexterity in aiming in real time.
Would love to see what you come up with and/or if you could video it in a few places.
It's not quite complete just yet, but what I have looks... interesting. It is definitly not a build to solo bosses with, but it is an expert at being a backbone of a team. I'm currently using it in tandem with fire tonfa and, using skeleton warrior SC and ult. courage, I have an infinite combo that can reduce low-ki enemies to ashes, and can dish out a lot of damage on winded bosses. The soul core of the bandaged ghost (forgot the name) gives additional slowed movement on ranged hit, and does itself inflict slowed movement via the yokai ability.
I also found out, that brilliant strategem's red. defense also gets inflicted from skeleton warrior's yokai ability. On non bosses, a single tap of SW inflicts red. defense + scorch and a bandaged ghost slows them down.
In the depths, this build is extremely useful for clearing out minor enemies waiting to ambush you and your team: You use your rifle to either downright kill or aggro them, you gain anima from doing so, then you nuke them with the team, since they're out of the dangerous zone. After that your team triggers the bigger mob who you conveniently pepper with your handcannon, inflicting scorch, red. defense, red. attack and slow with 2-3 shots, which also removes a big load of ki, especially if you hit weak points.
Depth bosses are somewhat hit and miss. A whole bunch of them can't be scorched, so my current build is kinda boned on them, because I've stacked melee dmg vs. scorched up to 100%+, but even then, persistently debuffing and shooting weak points from the afar can be rather beneficial to the team, as a single lucky shot can instantly down a human boss or deplete a load of ki from bosses.
From what I can see from what I currently have (about 70% complete build) I'd say this would be an excellent build for 3-man team of friends who each decide to specialise in one of the elements and take different positions in a fight. This one, the ranged fire build, plus a close up tank build (water or lightning) and an agile build with the final element + all equipped with a secondary purity/corruption weapon would make for an excellent team session.
