Stairs vs Ladders

Is there any advantage of stairs over ladders... stairs seems to require awful lots of space, like 5 tiles to reach the next floor.... does it have any benefit?

The biggest issue I've found is that you can't rescue people if you only have ladders.

Sounds reasonable. I expected problem with transporting goods on ladders, but looks like its not a problem.
So it looks like if I use ladders in the base (where no harm may happen to the people), thats kinda a good option.
