Are windows even useful?
I'm struggling to find meaning in having windows in the building. Their purpose is to provide light with the condition that you will be more susceptible to the temperatures outside the building.

If I want to ensure there is ample light, yet not want to fight with the elements to maintain room temperature, wouldn't other light sources like torches or light fixtures work better? Why even bother putting windows outside of aesthetics?

It's not like the pawns can shoot out of it (at least the metal ones) or it'll make a good pillbox bunker.

I do not use window I use the wood window. Glass is expensive better uses are for YOUR MANY REPAIRS.... you will need alot of it.

Windows seem to be made without needing any glass

They would work better if they did not also block the square right behind them... they really need to be able to be placed anywhere unless there is a wall attachment that would also go there, like a wall torch. Otherwise you are correct that they are pretty much pointless as they take up space but also barely save on power when you already have autoswitches for day/night cycles already. You really need them for the super early game but the fact that you cannot place a work bench and such behind them usually hinders their usefulness to the point that they aren't worth building since the light they give off isn't enough to reach across most of the room. You need to be able to access them to close and open them but I don't see why they just can't have an animation of the people climbing over stuff to open and close them like in real life.

They can help keep the room cooler in the summer heat, but really, hot temperatures shouldn't be an issue with survivors. Even in major heatwaves they've never complained, unless they're still wearing their winter sweaters and beanies..

Has anyone used the barred windows? Can you shoot out of them? I should give this a try.

Agreed, I tried windows once and then never looked back... The pros don't outweigh the cons.

idky drones can't open and close them or turn them on and off.. tbh i wish we the player could have more control over some of the things in this game like turning things on or off or opening and closing things etc simple lil things like that other than placing things to get built and stuff

A window in each of my survivors bedrooms looks nice.

Also, windows don't use any form of fuel/energy to let light in during the day.

Yes, aesthetically, windows are good things, I mean, would you want to work in a room for 8 hours of the day without a single window in it?

Some may like the bunker lifestyle, I prefer windows :)

Also, with the best building materials, like Carbon floors, walls and ceilings, you'll find just one wood burner heater, a fire place and a single electric heater will keep a large room nice and toasty, even during a very cold snap, with a few windows here and there.

There should be a debuff for your people when you don't have windows :-D

I think it affects happiness.
I once had a survivor move around in a building with no windows and I think he got a "troglodyte" debuff, even though he only stayed a few seconds.
That said, I don't know if he got this effect because of the lack of windows, or simply the lack of light

Would have been the cave dweller debuff, when they walk around rooms without any light.

I only really use windows as a light source early/mid game, in autumn/winter/toxic ash I close them all and switch to torches.

I keep that up until I have enough metal to spare to repair ceiling lights then I usually get rid of all the windows/torches in my main buildings, I only start adding them back in for decoration once I am certain my air defenses are taken care of.

Other than that I mostly use windows as a relatively safe spot for survivors to shoot out of in a building/anti flier bunker overlooking my killzone.

Cave Dweller happens when you have no flooring in the room i think.

I hate windows and I never use them.

Windows are no problem on the Saltu map. If your people are wearing summer clothing all year round, there is no need spending time opening and closing windows.
Stimpacker Jun 13, 2024 @ 2:49pm
Fred is correct.
With the right clothing, no heating/cooling is needed. So that makes opening/closing windows unnecessary.

In fact, in my games, I take this one step further. walls and doors are not needed. Only individual spacious bedrooms get INTERIOR walls and doors. There are no outside walls. My base is usually bedrooms upstairs and work/relax/food area downstairs. The entire building has no outside walls. People come and go from any direction as they please. They can enter their bedrooms upstairs via stairs, elevator or simply throwing up a magical pocket ladder and climbing directly into their own rooms.

More efficient.

PS: OK I admit the downstairs area has a 1-tile wall by the relaxation area. I needed that to hang a dartboard LOL.
