Yes, Hay cloth is a research breakthrough that you get or not with your map seed. I have it in my current playthrough.
I can confirm this is a breakthrough research project which I have gotten on 1 of my 3 game runs. Doesn't seem very common so really should try and find some clothblossom to plant quickly. If you put out a entire max field of it one harvest will last years so when I run a harvest I just then repurpose it for another crop and keep a few fields rotated to different things based on what I'm running short on.
A dry rack can provide us with leather from hides .
This both items are enough early on , after summer if u have the farms inside your base animals will try to come and eat the crops so u can have plenty of raw red meat and hides .
For me it is not worth making cloth from scrap cloth but all depend if u have observe or found in an expedition the clothblossom .
