Tooltip does say a % chance of getting sick but i think that only applies to humans consuming it.
Disclaimer: Don't shoot me when i am wrong.
Tamed animals can safely consume both fresh and decaying food without experiencing any adverse effects.
In the feeder panel you can select which food for either carnivore or herbivore you want to use.

By the way, just so I can plan ahead a bit: do animals eat as much as humans? In other words, one prepared ration a day or 10 unprepared rations?
As for the feeder, when you only have a few Ulfens the standard 3 wide feeder might hold a bit to much food and you get rotting notifications.
If that happens you can cheat the system by emtptying the feeders and it gets mixed with your stash and up it to full preservation again.
Or you can use the mod that offers a 1 tile feeder, cutting the spend food down by 2/3.
Smaller animals, such as dogs and shriekers, consume 5 units.
For omni/herbivore feeding i can give you an easy solution. For carnivores not so much.
With the amount of bugs attacking you(assuming your not playing the guardians scenario), you will always have a considerable amount of bug meat ready to be harvested, just make sure to put the feeder underneath one of the animal shelters roofs to make sure it lasts as long as possible.
Once you have fridges/freezers or a cool/freezer room made by using air cons and setting the temps to either refrigerate or freeze the contents of your storage in the room you can store a massive amount of meat for later use. I tend to make a point to use excess raw food to make slop and store a bit for emergency's.
