I am guessing you have a significant base ?
There was a discussion started by someone who had over 2k in an attack. I can't recall if the cause was pointed out.

Also number of traps have a rather big impact, I've seen mentioning. On my last game I only had about 35 traps, compared to well over hundred before, and although I played on easy, the attacks rarely exceeded 60 attackers of various kinds. Had hundreds in earlier games. 6 turrets, 8 flamethrowers.
There are a number of factors that determine the size and strength of the aggressive animals that will come and attack you. Everything from how your defenses are doing, to how many resources and survivors you have, to the difficulty level you've chosen.
It's likely that the 10 survivor mod had the most significant impact, as well as the difficulty, in this particular case. Do you have a lot of resources in your base as well?
Thinking you are correct in that it was due to the number of survivors and the difficulty level. May want to consider capping the number of attackers as it nearly crippled by medium-high end rig.
I am in a new game (which is going to be very short).
My attacks when from 20 dogs, 9 scissorhands, 4 Junos to 86 shrikers and 18 of the large ones with slopped armor that deflect almost all shots.
And I have 6 settlers and 2 dogs, a Wooden Wall and no turrets.
Not going to be a fair fight.
My tactic now is run guerrilla style run on small groups before the attack to try to thin the horde.
Devs: Would be nice if attacks took more than 12 hours to start.
Sometimes settlers take about that just to get home. :D

On my insane chaos game I had a 560 or so basic scarab spawn.
That does not pose much of a challenge later with a halfway decent defence setup. It just wrecks the PC performance.
Now an equivalent EP of broodmothers shriekers and flies (oh those damaging nasty flamethrower evading beasties), could cause more damage as they path less and do more attacking.
More crap is not challenge, it is still just more crap. And it simply cripples hardware.
