Elevator shaft problem
I built a second floor on part of my house and an elevator to go up to it. The problem is that I can't close the ceiling and roof of the second floor above the elevator shaft. It's as if building the elevator on the first floor opened up an infinitely high elevator shaft.
How do you close the ceiling and roof?

Just build a ceiling for the second floor first, then the roof and lastly the outer walls. Elevator before you build the outer walls for the second floor.
Please let me know if that fixed it.

As far as I can figure out, that is how the game works. Elevators go all the way up, even automatically extending upwards when you later add additional floors up to the six level limit.

Wood ovens and heaters are similar. Building them creates a stove pipe that automatically extends all the way up, blocking construction in that particular tile on every floor.

On the other hand, I accidentally discovered that elevators do not go all the way down. If, for instance, you start an elevator on the third floor, it does not extend down to the second or first floors. I was so taken aback when this happened that I immediately submitted a bug report. However, the behaviour may be useful.

Does this mean that when you create an elevator on the first floor, you automatically create an elevator shaft that's impossible to close? No ceiling or roof building is possible above the elevator shaft?
Without exaggerating, it's completely stupid!

You can close it when you build your building max level. I think it's 6 floors.
For smaller buildings perhaps the ladder or indoor stairs work better ?

OK... Thanks for your answers. This inability to build above the elevator shaft unless you build a six-story building is just stupid. I've sent a bug report online since it's a bug from my point of view.
For now, I'll stick to single-storey buildings. I don't have room for interior staircases, and a ladder... is not at all what I'd like to have in my own house!

You'll need to place a roof in advance before the elevator.

If you only wanted an elevator that connected the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors for instance, an experiment that might work would be to build up to the fifth floor, put flooring (carpet, wood, whatever) on the fifth floor then construct the elevator on the second floor.

Flooring also blocks elevator construction, so if the path is clear for the elevator on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors, but not the first or fifth, perhaps it will only exist on those three floors.

Are you sure ? That's what I did when I realized this shaft issue, and when I tried to remove the ceiling between ground floor and second floor in order to have the elevator being able to lift to the second floor, I was asked to remove first what was above, that is ceiling of the second floor and the roof.

Left building i did elevator first then the roof

Middle building i did roof first then elevator

Right building i added second floor not by picking ceiling but by picking room.

First two gave no hole, the last one did.

So perhaps for the first two you need to build the outer walls last ?

@ Flin & Blackforge
How did you manage to do this ?
OK, I try again :
- build the second floor;
- build the second floor ceiling and the roof;
- remove the first floor ceiling above the elevator;
- build the elevator.
That's it ?
Flin Fredstone Jan 6, 2024 @ 8:41am
no, i did not remove any ceiling.

I THINK the build order is ceiling-roof-outer walls. With the elevator build before the outer walls before or after the roof.

Since I intend to build a second floor on an already existing house that means I have to destroy all the outer walls before... No very immersion friendly LOL.
But... I'll try.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

@ Flin
Okay, thanks. I'll try it this way. I'll come back here to say if it worked :steamhappy:

Thank you very much! It works perfectly.
It's a weird way to build a house though and from my point of view it's a bug that needs to be fixed.

We solved it together, that's what matters. Now we can build what we want and assist others that run in to this problem :steamhappy::steamthumbsup:
