Useful building tips?
As a newbie I have found the building mechanics in this game much simpler than in Going Medieval. (I hope this doesn't change with the arrival of multi storey buildings in the forthcoming free update!)

I discovered an easy (for me) way to construct a building and foundations using the same materials, which is to start by building the roof on bare ground, which adds the foundation automatically. Then it's easy to fill in flooring, walls etc.

Extending an existing building, even with the tutorials, I haven't found easy at all.

I'm wondering if people have good building tips and/or links to recommended guides?

Your biggest issue is going to be whether or not you've got the right size room for your needs. All survivors/traders/military personnel get a +18 boost to their happiness if given their own 5x5 room. A 4x5 room, for example, will only give your survivors/traders/military personnel a +9 boost to their happiness.

You can extend your buildings bigger than 16x16 by overlapping foundations, but it means you have to create your foundation before your walls or roof.

You can also connect all of the rooms together, making one large building.

My only building tip would be to use sticks for your interior walls. Stick walls allow for some ventilation between rooms (more than wood or stone), spreading out the heat/cold so that no one room is too hot or too cold. Otherwise you need a vent to equalize the temperature between rooms.

What happens on sloping ground?

Really useful, thanks, especially using sticks for interior walls

Haven't played in some months but if it is still the same (there was a discussion about second floors from the devs at some point), you can only have one floor level at the moment. Means at a slope you need to higher your foundation to the "highest point in the terrain" (best plan ahead). Otherwise you will have stairs down the hill and connecting the roofs is annoying.

4x5 rooms (or ANY 20 tile together) gives +18 happiness bonus. There's no way to get more bonus. Bigger rooms don't matter for the bonus. 5x5 isn't needed, it's the same as 4x5.

He's 100% right, I only ever build 4x5 rooms.

A prior thread mentioned 2x10 rooms. So I expanded my current building with a 4x10 room, ran a wall down the middle, with doors on the short end. At first, I erred with my floors. So I fixed that - however I still have a situation where the floors, while contiguous, are from 3 different builds.

The game recognizes the "room" as having 20 tiles, but not as a spacious bedroom. I rechecked the size, even moved the beds out and back in. Still not a spacious bedroom.

Will move the beds out for at least one sleep cycle this time, and try again.

Any other suggestions?

Edit: also have another room (kitchen/dining) that keeps saying room is not fully enclosed. I can't find the gap. Floor, walls, doors/windows, roof - all intact. What's the trick for that?

I already have two survivors who love each other sleeping in 2 beds next to each other in a 4x5 room. They get +9 each from sleeping with their beloved. Curious to know if they could ever get more from a bigger 2-bed room, but don't see the need right now.

My grumpiest, meltdown-prone survivor was assigned (by luck) to a narrow 20 tile room (ex storage area) and she gets +18 which she needs.

The survivors also get +5 from bedrooms with nice flooring, of course. Have people found that multiple private bedrooms are *necessary* for non-grumpy survivors, and if so are these all under one roof?

They should also get the +18 bonus from the room. Or do they get that already? Sorry if I misunderstood.

Here is a rather old screenshot of a couple sleeping together in a 4x5 room:

Won't have access to the game for a while, but I haven't seen the couple get +18 each, only +9 each (which is fine). My understanding (could be wrong) is that the +18 buff is only for single occupancy of a 20-tle room?

Very helpful screenshot, thanks!

4 by 5 room is enough for the 18 plus happiness, when it comes to a couple just make sure the beds are next to each other like in the screenshot and they will still get it, if the beds are apart they will get a penalty for not being next to their partner.

If you get unexpected survivors either from walk in's or rescues and haven't got a room ready yet, just place a sleeping spot, in one of your existing larger buildings until you get around to making a new room, so long as there is only one survivor in each building the game will treat that as though its a spacious bedroom giving you the bonus.

Using stockpiles can help you plan out the layout of your base early on, pause the game when you first start, place the stockpiles then cancel them they will leave a mark behind on the ground that you can use to plan out where you want your buildings and how far they will be from walls etc..

Yep, I fixed that mistake, all the floors are on the same level now. Probably should just tear down the back of the house and try again with the 4x10 room (split into two 2x10s).

The "not enclosed" area was one solid, uninterrupted build, so floors, walls, and roof should be fine.

Oh well, lessons learned for next run. I got them to Fall of Year 5, may be a good time to shut it down and restart on a new seed.

Did it share a wall with a room of a different height? Because that'll do it. Best to just not use rooms of different heights because it's too clunky.

Yep, that's the issue. Lesson learned.

Hey AirToob! The building system will be the same as before, we're just adding an option for you to have extra floors to your buildings. There will be a button in the top right corner to left you cycle between the different floors.

If you want to see it in action, we're streaming the DLC content and free update on Monday 6th November at 15:30 GMT on YouTube and Twitch[twitch.tv]!
