Lol, well like I said I’m new and learning things yet. Got pretty messed up last time I got attacked but I guess I just have to plan things out better. So talas is the better choice then?
Best group differs a little from scenario to scenario, but i would rank them like this.
1. Laara on all scenarioes, simply due to extreme farming, speed and manipulation and extremely flexible.
2-4 Vivien her speedy tailor trait is same as 400% manipulation on cloth and textile armor, bandages etc. everything with cloth and fabrics, se levels up FAST. put her on cooking and tailoring and you saved a persons job on tailor duties.
2-4 . Quinn gives you a lot of speed on expeditions and is a fine constructer, not the best there is but up there.
2-4 Ken double scrap or what is in terms of time equal to approx. 50% faster scavanging. scrap metal is a key ressources and the only one that you cant produce yourself ib the crashlanding scenario, good on all scenarios excells in crashlanding. On sow and sell and military you can get metal one way or the other.
5-9 Talas manipulation, speed, flexible and smart... a very good constructer, problably 2nd best over time.
5-9Paulette Manipulation, takes a little time to get from place to place, but when she gets there she saves more time than lost from lack of speed, Good for crafting, as the obvious one, but also scavange and constuction, her top potential being used as a scavanger is very high. in her own way fairly flexible.
5-9 Rakha construction specialst, a littte lfaster construction than Talas, works well in a team together freeing up Talas for ressource gathering. but would choose Talas over Rakha.
5-9 Edmund, his fast sleeping gives him roughly what is equal to 15%-20% manipulation, due to more work time, on top of that you get to choose where you want that bonus, so if you want him researching you have 2-3 hours free research every day, if you want him to cook you have a lot of sparetime for other stuff. On top of that he got his stories which adds 10% manipulation and your sci, when you civs read his stories and he is flexible as well.
5-9 Vicente would not choose him over Laara in any case but makes a great addition on the sow scenario if you couple him up with laara as your first 2 picks, being insanely farming strong,
10. Krista strong on reseach, thats just her thing, can be cooking as prio 1. research 2. giving you a lot of breakthrougs in research. The thing is once you get established you are ok with most picks, team should be based on how to get safe the fastest and getting from A-B.
11-15
Emmelin, Simon Rita Carter, Samantha each with their perks.
A lot of people wil rate Emelin higher, reason i do not is that she wont be the difference from keeping your crew happy or not, she is still up there in my rankings though.
Note the best teams differs depending on scenario and who you already choose.
My best team for crash: Laara, Ken, vivien, Quinn
My best team for trade: Laara, Vicente and Talas or Quinn
My best team for military: Laara, Vivien, Quinn, Rakha, Talas last one i struggle with could be anyone in top 10. but have started testing with Krista, which seems to speed up my progress as she does free up everyone else to other duties. Edmund, Simon, Carter, paulette, interesting as well.
Talas is quite a bit better than Simon, Simon isnt bad and one of the stronger survivors.
Emelin is a nice pick because the extra happiness she gives from her food is equal to food one tier higher, i.e. quick meals will be as good as a tasty meal normally would. This saves tons of food resources over time since tasty and chef's meals are quite expensive. It also saves time because quick meals are, well, quick to make. It DOES however incentivize making Emelin your ONLY cook so that people aren't missing out on the unique bonus. The ingredients you save may allow you to run smaller farms, but your mileage may vary. Most won't rate her top tier, but as long as you keep everyone else out of HER kitchen, she'll make your food go farther. She's a bit of double edged-sword that requires specialization but provides a unique bonus.
Ken is highly regarded and for good reason; that scrap metal literally does NOT grow on trees and sooner or later you're going to run low on sources. Getting more metal out of every metal source can go a long way. You're going to draft all your survivors and group up for swarm attacks anyway so he's basically guaranteed to get his happiness from bloodlust too.
Laara may not be precisely what you want for any certain strategy but she's never a bad pick. Speed, faster farming, and she's not indifferent or incapable of any skills. She has no downside and is a great final member of any team.
Umayr is often underrated by newer players because his strength lies indoors, but consider that eventually you're going to have a nice spacious base anyway. Once you get some good repeatable crafting recipes and the industry to support them, you can basically cut Umayr off from any task that sends him outside and just let him crank out the goods all day. ALSO NOTE: survivors can shoot through open windows! Build your base right and Umayr can help fight from indoors because his bounses apply to SHOOTING things!
Vivien is your number one tailor, hands down. No one else even comes close. The problem is that with a little research under your belt, you'll find she doesn't need to spend as much time at the sewing table because better gear lasts MUCH longer, minimizing her purpose. Just keep her indoors and keep her hands busy and she'll do right by you. JUST REMEMBER SHE CANNOT HEAL AT ALL. Do NOT let her be the last one unharmed or you're going to lose people.
Nova is an interesting one and stronger than most might think. Because she cannot meltdown, she can literally ignore several needs. She still has to sleep and eat eventually to avoid fainting but she can completely ignore relaxation and aesthetics of any kind. Music, nice floors, statues to admire...meaningless to Nova. She actually encourages you to mess with the schedule and completely cut out relaxation so she can work, eat and sleep. The catch is that she also somewhat reduces the value of any other survivors who do nice things, like nice cooking, story time, music night or what have you.
Paulette is strong as long as she's making use of that manipulation bonus. Understand which activities key off manipulation and keep her busy with them. She's not as good a tailor as Vivien but she doesn't lose her best trait when the synth armor is done. She's good for multitasking around the house; dont forget things like assembling electronics, research and cooking; those all benefit. Again, like Vivien, keep her indoors and make sure she's doing stuff that requires a progress bar.
Annette, like paulette and Vivien, is a homemaker. She needs to stay indoors. Her slow speed means getting caught in bad weather can be catastrophic. Her ability to calm others can be helpful in the case of meltdowns but once you've got your strategy figured out, meltdowns become less and less of an occurrence and that loses value. She also has TWO indifferent skills, limiting her ability to switch tasks as needed. I'd rather take Vivien or Paulette, to be honest.
Edmund can work just fine; he shouldn't touch the crops but otherwise can become whatever you need and the group morale bonus doesn't hurt. Just keep an eye on your food supply and pair him with a strong cook and a generous farm plot; 25% more food goes faster than you think.
Talas vs Simon: Simon is a tank, plain and simple. If you're forced to actually fight bugs in combat, Simon will be the last man standing. That said, if things are going well you won't be doing that. Talas is more proactive in that he gets progress bars done quicker. Makes him a fantastic observer since he can dash out, look at plants and run home... but see the advice on Edmund about that food supply; he's a hungry boi.
Krista is...a tricky pick. She'll PLOW through that research tree (make sure she's got sufficient light to get better manipulation bonuses!) and unlock lots of extra cool stuff but she cannot craft at all, meaning no touching any of the benches. This limits her post-research options and her slight movement speed penalty, while not crippling, makes her slightly worse at observing than she would be otherwise. If you know you can easily cover all the other niches and still find productive things for her to do, she's your top scientist by far.
Naras can work like Nova, in that he requires no relaxation, fun or aesthetics. He's different in that he's locked out of equipping any kind of weapon. If you play well and choose your team wisely, he won't NEED a weapon. He mimics Annette's anti-meltdown trick but can actually do stuff outside without needing a freaking walker to get anywhere or suffering boredom. He's also a good healer.
Samantha is an interesting pick; lots of high-tech devices have long craft times and she cuts them down considerably. Furniture's not a huge chore but she wipes that out too. She's generally a strong builder overall; just make sure you keep those crops growing and have sufficient meal storage; dying of starvation with animals all around (because I'm a vegetarian!) is a pretty dumb way for someone to die.
Wow that’s for all that info. Yeah Vivian seems to be pretty much mandatory, preparing hides into leather and making clothing takes a lot of time. Also I’ve wondered about Emelin as well, that +6 morale doesn’t sound all that impressive but it’s the most easily accessible community bonus. Still, idk if it’s worth running her just for that. I really like Quin, he’s great for construction like you said, good with research and is usually pretty happy. I haven’t unlocked expeditions yet though.
I’m torn on Laara, I really like her but if I have someone set on farming I usually like them to stay in the base doing crafting, construction etc so they aren’t running back and forth constantly when something is ready to be harvested. But keeping her inside I feel would be holding her back since she gets a speed and manipulation increase making her suitable for scavenging, cutting and mining as well. Im so conflicted lol.
I started with that combo on my 2nd crash. My (casual everything on "normal" gamer) experience is mixed:
Laara - no discussion, thats just a no brainer.
Vivien - if you pick her for both, cooking and tailoring, you have to whether set a fixed sleeping schedule, so all survivors more or less eat at the same time, or to only define cooking stacks (not the "up to" one, but the one time orders), but that might become annoying. For me, she never had enough time to make much use of her tailoring skill. If you setup cooking and tailoring with same priority, there is a chance she does not cook for a while and no cooked food is left.
Quinn - in my opinion I need one dude on research all the time, at least in the first year. That means Quinn wouldnt be available to building, but thats his best trait and you need to build a lot. If I would start a new game, I wouldnt put him on research, so I would have to choose someone else for it.
Ken - I value him the same as Jack. Both, Quinn and Vivian e.g. start with 0 in combat, and with Jack they get levels easier. Kens benefit is obvious: more heavy metal :) But to be honest, it seems to highly depend on the seed if that is really needed. In my last game I had like 3k scrap unused.
tldr: My next game would be:
- Laara for farming (early game she can do other things as well, but late game she does not have time for anything else than farming, maybe in winter :D)
- someone for cooking on prio 1
- anyone on research only, with option to do other things in late game
- anyone for crafting (early game focus on tailoring, end game everything else)
At least that would suit my play style (almost all the time on fast forward).
Wow, that’s for all that info! Yeah I haven’t tried Ken yet, usually I like scavengers to have hardworking like Laara and Talas so they get everything done faster, but that double scrap metal is gonna be hard to beat.
I’ve thought about Nova a lot, but it’s hard to figure out what to do with her, she doesn’t really excel at anything and anyone with manipulation, speed or interest bonuses are gonna be more efficient than her. If only she could research, she’d be the ultimate solo survivor. Ive seen people suggest her for expeditions since she can endure much longer than other survivors.
I’ve also thought about Krista / Daniel but I can’t bring myself to use them since after they both finish researching they are more of a burden for the community than anything.
I really like Paulette since she can pretty much do anything with better efficiency than most other survivors but she isn’t great at one thing. She’d be a good backup to Vivian I think since she can do construction, crafting, cooking, farming, gathering all with higher efficiency. She’s a crazy medic too with the combination of interested in healing and her manipulation bonus. She got to level 8 in healing by the third attack of the first year, well things also went super sideways which only helped her level up lol.
Early game (first 5-10 attacks) try to kite some bugs around with one survivor, while others do the shooting. Once you have enough scrap, place a field of traps (like up to 10x10). You can kite the bugs through them => makes your life a lot easier. Imho traps are OP at the moment (at least on normal mode)
My hat is off to tommy_b_schmidt (as usual) and Daynon Drakeson for those exceptionally detailed and thoughtful analyses. Really nice work, both of you.
The benefit to Krista/Daniel is that research is a HUGE part of your success and you desperately need some techs sooner than later. If she gets some cool breakthroughs you can get some extra techs too, like better batteries, meat printing, improved railguns, or some other stuff I might not know about. Besides, once the research is DONE, so many things will be automated that you can just have her do whatever you need and not worry. You've basically won.
Crazy idea: take Krista AND Daniel. Double up the desks. Rush those techs like no tomorrow and see how well things go when you're ahead of schedule on science!
If your map doesnt have a crop, you can unlock it for free by sending one of them on expeditions. i find this quite valuable.
Just for info manipulation doesnt affect research and observation, consciousness does. Consciousness is unaffected by light, so she will be just as effecienc doing research and observations in the dark as she would in daylight.
Manipulation affects the below only:
Crafting
(note manipulation do not affect tailoring, assembling and cooking, it should but it doesnt)
Scavanging
construction
Mining
cutting
Ah, good to know about cooking, tailoring and assembling. What about healing and farming? I saw somewhere that it effected that as well. I wish there was more clarity on what actually effects it, it seems to be mostly guessing.
Yeah we have been commenting on that wording "such as" since day 1 in EA. they seem to refuse refrasing or to implement what they are actually describing it as "work with hands"... last time i checked you dont assemble, tailor and cook with your feet :-) well maybe nova does with her being obtuse.
