With traps and flamethrowers I do just fine. You have lo lead the enemies to the traps, though.
Recently y built stick and then brick fences to lead the enemies to the traps. Not to stop them.
Also, you don't really need to make "complete" fortifications. My "first" protections typically are a long corridor with multiple turns, one side being open (so enemy rush in) with traps (so enemies die) and the other side is a closed door (so my people can get in).
Enemies then rush through the traps while being shot at.
As time go by I make it bigger until it surrounds the base, more or less.

Also consider -- if not too far -- leaving your initial crash area to settle near a wooded area (they do exist).
The game really needs a plausible fortification material you can scale early to wall your settlement, and nothing beats wood for that (if available).
- A
