Tips for food on Desert map?

I'm a new player and I'm desperately searching around crops to try and find which ones are food. What plants do you recommend? Also I've seen you can tame animals, does that mean you can breed them for meat?

I believe you received recommendations for food in response to your other post. But in response to your second inquiry, why yes you can breed them for meat. Just click butcher when you are thinking rib-eyes on the barbie.
