You can get wheat as a discovery via exploration still. Plenty of other foods to find to make veg soup with, no reason for anyone to starve.
An alternative is to use the "Beyond Stranded" mod, which allows your survivors to do quick research which will discover nearly all items available in the universe.
As soon as you land, you might pause and then click-and-drag across large swaths of the map to see if the essential resources are available. I spend a lot of time looking for good seeds, because there are some real doozies out there. If you don't find what you are looking for (don't forget to check breakthroughs), nobody will think less of you for restarting with another seed.
Clothblossom, in particular, can be a problem. There are several ways to deal with its absence, but life is too short. No clothblossom? Time to reload.
Grain, on the other hand, is the most ubiquitous resource and almost every seed will have one or both of its two forms. Somewhere. The wheat can be hard to spot, though. But if there's no grain, that's a real game-stopper. You need grain for everything from food to antibiotics to fuel for balloon expeditions and flamethrowers. Nothing would cause me to press Escape faster than an absence of grain.
Now if I could figure out why my Diesel generator isn't powering my soldering table i'd be super happy.
