But the feature of replacing / upgrading walls and such with other building materials was a new feature that became available after I did the tutorial, so maybe it's a new thing in the tutorial as well?
I did get it figured out. Thanks. It seems you have to actually kind of offset the hay option and then kind of "roll" it for the roof. I know that sounds weird but that's what it basically is. You can't cover the whole roof in one go unless it's the same dimensions the whole way around. It's a pita but I finally got it to work.
And yes, I've had some strange looking roofs a few times in the game, so it's a good thing they're normally disabled visually
