Whats in Stranded: Alien Dawn?
Seen a few recommendations for this game from players of Rimworld. I've watched a few playthroughs and they're very much alike. Considering giving this a shot but before that:

1. Content and mechanics wise, how does it compare to Rimworld vanilla(exclude DLCs and no mods)? More content? Better depth? Complex or complicated? Improved mechanics? What does it do better and worse than Rimworld?

2. What new stuff does it bring to the table that wasn't in Rimworld?

3. Whats missing in Stranded that was in Rimworld?

Appreciate your feedback

You are better off typing that in youtube and getting full play through video results back to decide for yourself.

1. Content is very basic. What you see is what you get. Extremely shallow and over-complicated. It does absolutely nothing 'better' than Rimworld besides graphics.

2. ? This is not a re-make of Rimworld. The two games really have very little to do with each other.

3. Pretty much everything. Like I said above, there is little in common between the two.

I would call this game 'Inspired' by Rimworld but has a totally different way of presenting itself.

I came here with the same question, after reading the RPS review.

So far, looking back through previous threads, I'm getting the impression the differences are:

* Easier? (Though the difficulty in Rimworld is totally customisable)
* Less complex? (In terms of colonist behaviour controls, etc)
* No world map / caravans / planet-scale gameplay?
* Still Early Access, so I guess it could change a lot before it's finished? I've been burned a little by EA before.

People don't seem to be pointing out specific mechanics that aren't in Rimworld, and most reviews are saying it's "3D Rimworld".

I would be happy with 3D Rimworld, but if it's not that then what am I missing?

Just for your information, the game will exit Early Access today (probably in a few minutes, 2pm BST).

I find the comparison to Rimworld pretty superficial based on the simple fact that somehow the devs of Stranded decided that putting in the work to hand-build a limited number of characters was a better choice than building a solid random character generator and customization. Rimworld's greatest advantage is that it tells _your_ story with unique characters, and not premade ones. Based on that alone, I'd say Stranded goes in a wholly different direction.
This might be a problem (if you're like me and prefer the RP/emergent storytelling elements) or it might not be, depending on what your priorities are.

It is not a 3-D Rimworld. I wish it were.
No 'World' map, no caravans, no other settlements.
Fixed characters with skills that can be improved.

This is, in a nutshell: A tower defense/survival combination inspired by Rimworld. Many game mechanics are strange or just comical. i.e Exploration is performed by hot-air balloon you construct from scrap can and go in any direction. High tech landing craft/shuttle but the best you can do on the ground is carry things by hand. It is an excellent farming/ranching simulator, if that's what this game was supposed to be.

Gameplay is actually a lot of fun and addicting, but it is so shallow, and the sci-fi aspect has grabbed physics from the far-flung edges of reality, it is more like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Have you Rimworld players ever tried an indy game called "After The Collapse"? I have a few hundred hours of play time in ATC. which is fun and challenging; have considered Rimworld, but it always seems too expensive.

For me it gets boring fast compared to rimworld where i have several 100h playtime. In Alien Dawn there is not much to do at the moment. You build your fortress and let ressources collect. After that ? nothing.... for the moment. Sure there are attacks all some days but nothing special. I hope they make the game bigger. It is enough potential for it. The graphics are awesome.

Oh great! That clears one thing up then, thanks.

So, OK, "shallow" and "tower defence" are turn-offs unfortunately.

These hand-crafted characters, I suppose that would be good if they've been given some depth and their own evolving storylines? If it's just like someone else picking my Rimworld squad the same every time that is less good. I can see it would hurt replayability being stuck with the same dudes every time though.

A thing I like about Rimworld is the mildly amusing stuff the RNG throws out. Someone's asked for help, and wow it's Kevin's wife! We have to rescue her, then. From 20 mad squirrels. But it turns out they hate each other, and she's a greedy pyromaniac who "won't clean"; oops. So, none of that in Stranded I guess?

I don´t get it why they leave EA now. I guess its the money. The game is still lacking in content in my opinion. Maybe the next is coming DLC´s ? I don´t hope so.... not yet.

They already announced that the next major update after 1.0 will be FREE.

"We'll be releasing a free update later this summer, and while we will have to wait to share the finer details with you, we can say that it's quite beefy (or maybe "leafy" would be a better term?)."

idk why you love rimworld, you can be the kind of dude who always want more and more contents, a new tech, more deep gameplay....

for me rimwolrd was just for "my little team of survivors in a hostile planet, keep them alive and fight"

i play stranded since EA realease, was frustated at start with original scenario, and seen the game coming better and better for MY gameplay, now for me, it s BETTER than rimworld, in fact it s the rimworld of my dreams with crazy graphics/animations....

i cant tell you, you ll love stranded, but i can tell you, each time i ll stop one of my game for a "little game on my favorite survival/building" be sure i ll launch stranded.... with the military update, stranded check all the box of what i was needed...

i played rimworld, banished, founder fortune, stoneheart, first feudal, oxygen, aftermath, becastled, atomic society, shelter, going medieval and many more that i forget, and i feel that all this time i was just waiting stranded...

you ll maybe think im a dumb fan, but one month ago i was still frustated cause even the training scenario wasnt enought good for me, and now the game is just perfect for me...

so at end, i ll say that for a player who like this kind of game, even if he's not perfect for you, this game deserve LARGELY his price.
