I am asking because I’m on my 4th year and the only things left to research are defense related. I can’t make cloth from hay.
Cloth was actually the worst thing to get because I have no clothblossom anywhere around and I was only able to get it via balloon expedition with Maki.
And even then it was the very last plant she discovered.
And I only had feathered birds for the first in-game year and then they completely vanished.

I had to rely on expeditions and even then the RNG was awful.
So my question was - how can I make cloth from hay through research?
You can send a survivor down there and s/he can identify and be back the same day. Not ideal, but not terrible. (Don't send Krista, whose high Intellect will speed identification, but whose slow mobility will make coming and going achingly slow, especially if you make her harvest and carry clothblossom back.)
You might already do this, because one can still sometimes miss things, but if you click and drag your cursor over large swaths of land, a menu with all the resources in the highlighted area will appear. Click on the resource you want and then use your scroll dial to zoom in on that resource. If you don't find clothblossom right after your crash landing or it is too far, time for a new seed. The breakthroughs Chitin Synthetics or Cloth from Hay can substitute for clothblossom, but they do involve an extra step at the Workshop Bench. In the research tree, chemical cloth synthesis can also substitute, but it takes valuable fuel. You can also observe/harvest the skinbark, of which there is a fair amount in Laara, and make veggie leather.
Laara is my favorite seed. The aggressive insects often spawn on or near the two nearby insect nests and depopulate them. Raid a nest, mine the carbon nanotubes, make carbon armor (need, I believe, level 5 Crafting), and you will be asking "Who cares about clothblossom?"
EDIT: The devs just destroyed Laara in one of their recent updates, substituting some of the worst breakthroughs for some of the best. Among the former five breakthroughs were Printing Components, Fuel Fermentation and Carbon Armor. Featured in the current breakthroughs (now only four) are Meat Printing, Hay to Cloth, and Sleep Training. They kept Hay to Cloth. Am so disgusted.
That can be done, but it will probably take longer than a day and might best be done very early in the game when the survivors still have their +50 Survivor Bonus. There are suggestions elsewhere in these threads as to how best to accomplish such a trek.
Or you can reasonably decide that is too far and, as ferus so eloquently put it, consider it "the same as if it wasn't there at all." The only point is to enjoy the game.
