Dog Breeding

I have two dogs, one male, one female, and it's been almost a year with no pregnancies. One's a Great Dane, and one's a Weimaraner. Can they not have puppies? I ask because my save is puppyless.

I don’t think you can mix breed them. I have no problem with same breed dogs (got over 60 now) lol.

I am pretty sure that the two dogs must be the same breed, in order for them to make puppies. But take my word for it, you don't want puppies!

How on earth do you keep them fed???? I gave up when I had 27 dogs -- couldn't keep them in food no matter how hard I tried; they started to go berserk and destroying things and killing each other, so I ended up slaughtering them all except for 2 same-sex puppies.

I have lots of dried meat (used 4 food trays) The map I was on had lots of Ulfens attacking (I have over 10k of leather)

Edit: I am trying to get 50 of them to level 5 for a group photo but it is taking ages to train them. Good thing is a lot of the new puppies are starting on level 2 and higher. Once they get to level 5 I turn the training off.

I'm fairly certain I have had dogs breed that were two different breeds, and the puppies that come out are just one breed or the other.

I remember having one boxer in a playthrough and in about 20 offsprings there was no boxer between them, you guys might be right, easy enough to check in the mod editor if you know where too look but I just don't feel like it :P.

The mod editor just indicates you need two "dogs" of opposite genders for pregnancy to occur, breed isn't specified.

Still, the OP said he went a year without any pregnancy. Which seems unusual for a species that has something like a 15% pregnancy chance. They breed like rabbits most of the time in my game. Maybe one of his dogs wasn't actually fully mature yet?

I just tamed a male boxer and a female great dane in my game, and have no other dogs, just to confirm that different breeds can intermix like that. Pretty sure they can though.

Just coming back to confirm that breed of a dog is not important. i.e. two dogs of different breeds can have offspring, as I indicated I "believed" above.

Well after what I just went through. I am not breeding anymore dogs in my next play through.

BTW, that photo would be better if they were dalmations....and if there were 47 more of them.

That would be good, but no, it took so long to get to this stage, the longest part getting them trained to level 5 as you need to draft them to get them all in a photo. Also if 54 uses 4 food trays (that is 1200 food) I would need to tame some Ulfens as I doubt the attacks I am getting will cover it.

Edit: Also I do not think Dalmatians are in the game.

I have the same.. One Dane and one Wimmey. They do not breed first very fast but then they will. Then all of a sudden you will have 10 running around because once they start breeding they .... breed on. They do not have to be the same breed. I did notice though that all offspring will be the breed of the mother.

Well, it seems I was wrong again! I haven't had dogs -- except a couple as pets -- for such a long time. But my conclusion still stands: You don't want puppies! A pack of dogs is way more trouble than it could ever be worth.
