Starving animals

I don't get it. I have a trough filled with hay, berries, buttermelons. They are herbivores. Trough is accessible.

I thought maybe the shelter over it was a problem so I dismantled it. Now the trough is in the open, full of the correct food and my animal is starving while standing in front of it

Make sure it's 2 spaces free for large animals and some animals only eat certain food, not a mix. So select that specific food to fill the trough. E.g round cactus fruit for the camel...

Some animals will only eat specific foods. You can't feed buttermelons to Ulfren, for instance. I think they eat those blueberry things. Therefore you may wish to ensure you have a lot of a specific food and that your dimwit AI bots aren't stuffing something incompatible in the trough like buttermelons if they can't eat it. Check your animal description, and if you can't find whatever food it likes if its statistics window, it means you haven't discovered the food source yet.

Ulfren absolutely eat buttermelons. I built their pen over naturally growing buttermelons so they eat those most of the year.

What you should do is planting a big hay field in front of theirs pen and disable harvesting . The herbivores will be well fed but cant clear the blade grass farm fast .

After taming ,your animal will happily chew on everything except meat for certain creatures . There is no favorute food or animal that only eat 1 type of food .

Grass field in the pen is clutch, putting your trough under a roof and stocking it with items that don't perish (hay, glittercaps) while under a roof works well too
