does hay grow back?
I made the mistake not to observe hay the first year as i had plenty, but now i'm in spring second year and i really need it for bricks but it hasn't grown back in the wild. All other types of plants have grown back except for hay? If it doesn't grow back i'm screwed basicly.

You can plant hay field and they grow very fast , like 5 days i think ? The other version in desert is 6 days .

only crops regrow

Bushes regrow, unless you cut them down, most other items a cut down during harvesting and don't regrow. Bladegrass and giantgrass don't regrow once cut, but there should be more nearby for you to observe. Sometimes find it growing under bushes for example.

explore further out & there should be more hay

I can't plant the grass because I didn't observe/research it the first season.

I checked the whole map but I can't find any grass. It's weird though because I only cut the crass close to base in the first year. It seems like some sort of bug that no grass has reappeared the 2nd year. So basicly if you don't observe/research it the first year, you are screwed....

It does not regrow. But you can get random observations during expeditions. Then you can plant them as normal crops.

In your case it is most definitely a bug. Grass and other plants (excluding trees) will always grow back as long as you didn't cut them down and only harvested them.

Not sure -- I had a grain grass plot in a seed that I ignored at the start and lost it all --- even though I still saw the red grass area.

I reloaded that seed from an earlier save, and realized that I could have identified that particular plot much earlier, but it was "withering" and about to die within days. As a result, that particular desert playthrough of mine I never ever had grain.

Note -- this was before the last update.

I believe this is the correct answer.

Yes, at least the hay fields I've planted (blade grass) have to be replanted when cut, so it's probably the same for the ones in the wild. Is there a hay type that can be harvested, and not cut?

But about in the wild, there could be some random respawns of plants where they used to grow. It would probably be realistic, with plants dropping seeds during summer before they're harvested / cut?

Cut wild crops won't grow back, hay don't have harvest option but only cut. So wild fields will be gone. Farmed one, at least you can re-seed it.

observe one before you cut it, and you can replant it.

But yes, this is the answer. If it says cut, whether it's grass or a tree or a bush, it's not coming back unless you can replant it. Lots of veg you can harvest and it will grow back, but perhaps unlike grass in real life, these don't come back.

IF you don't cut it down and the local wild life doesn't eat/destroy it, it will grow back the following year. This holds true for all the plants.

Once you harvest an item, certain types will grow back, like cotton, fruit bush, sugar tubes.. others won't, like grain, pumpkins, grasses, trees, bushes.. once you "cut them down" they gone. Also some items might be killed by beetles or birds these will vanish over time.

I find it's unlikely to find a spot where there is no grass on a map outside of what you cut down, usually there's a good 5k of crop in a given map.

For the grass type you can access blade grass or giants grass. For sticks you can make it via the chopping block, get it from bushes or even from chopping fruit bushes for example. It might be advantageous to get it from cutting grain stalks as well, ie a form of Straw.. rather than Hay..

Just want to add to the above comments that if you get a very bad streak in weather (Bad cold snap or bad heat wave) it will kill plants too, in one of my games I had a bad heatwave that wiped out a good chunk of the native flora and my crops, I was able to replant because I observed them before hand but if I hadn't certain species I can't find on the map anymore

yep, this is accurate. In this or another thread I noted that on my first desert seed playthrough I never had grain. I reverted back to the first save from that run and noticed it had been there, but even on like day 2 it was withering and about to die within days. Since I hadn't explored that far, I never observed it, and when it died the red color remained, but the crop was forever lost. And there was no other grain on the planet.

I think in my current playthrough I must have done that with smokeleaf, because darn it I need some pain relief and I don't have any pipes.
