GPU Temp Spiking Issue
Hello.

I have a unique issue I havent seen before in any game. My GPU is spiking from 40-45 to 70 to 76c

The temps are not above norm, but the behavior is.

First my specs

RTX 3080 12GB
i7-13700K
Z690 Auroua Elite AX
Corsair H150i Cappella Elite AIO 360mm
32GB ddr5 ram 6000mhz
1TB NVME
850watt psu
1920x1080 240hz monitor x2
3440x1440 144hz monitor x1
case P500a-DRGB Phantecks

Ok the issue. Temps will be around 45c to 50c in game on max settings when out of nowhere, doing nothing special, the gpu temps jump by 20 to 25c fans kicking into higher speed to cope, and it lasts for about 15 seconds to a minute then returns.

So I turn on vsync and put monitor to 60hz. No change,

For reference.

Warzone 2.0 @ 3440x1440 144hz= gpu temp 60 to 65c
@ 1920x1080p 240hz =gpu temp 65 to 72c

CP2077 3440x1440 144hz 55c to 75c
1920x1080 240hz 60 to 77c
1920x1080p 60hz 45 to 55c

Icarus 3440x1440 144hz 65c
1920x1080p 60hz 55 to 65c

God of War 1080p 60hz 45c
Spiderman 3440x1440 144hz 65c
4k 60hz 55 to 60c
1080p 45 to 60c(depends if I am using dlss

This game. 1080p 240hz temps 65 to 76c
1080p 60hz 40 to 76

Now the oddity is, the change of hz has no effect on temp. And unlike the other games, their temps stay normal, this game has a temp spike for a minute then goes back to a low temp and then does it again,

Like revving a car engine kind of effect.

I know without a doubt I have no pc cooling issues as I game on 1080p, 3440x1440 and 4k, from 60hz to 240hz and while my gpu is rated for up to 83c before throttling,

the way the gpu is acting is what has me questioning why.

Any dev insight would be appreciated and if you need log files do let me know.

I dont use discord, sorry

loaded from a save point and its not doing it now. Will update if it returns

I know you set vsync on but see if limiting framerate at the nv control panel helps.

I already did that, was the first thing I confirmed, since I only use 240hz in pvp games, and limit it to 60 for everything else.

But oddly I closed the game to make this post and then loaded up a save and it hasnt done it yet. So maybe an odd ball one time bug I dont know but so far seems to not be replicating itself.

ive got a 4080 and get the spikes too, my temps are lower. but i get the exact same thing, its very odd. 4k max settings locked at 60 fps for this game.

less tan 80º temp on a Gpu is very good and normal
are your case fans on Maximum speed ?
reduce game shadows to minimum.

You are not understanding the issue. The issue isnt overheating. Its the sudden spiking of gpu temps but not gpu usage. It doesnt happen in games graphically more demanding or other early access titles. It is really random.

Thanks for chiming in.

I noticed this happens more on new maps, but if I save then close game and load I cant reproduce it yet. Let me know if same for you.

Also when your GPU temp spikes, do you notice little to no gpu usage change? It really is a oddity. Nice gpu btw!

If you are using Afterburner, check the graph and see if you have sudden GPU load and power draw with the temp spike. I dont know what would cause it, I literally have the same processor and gpu and ram as you. Dont have the game yet, but if its having issues, i think i may hold off for a bit.

That is the point I was making. Usage didnt increase, just a sudden spike in the gpu, but I havent been able to reproduce it, so I cant really do much until it happens again. It was an odd bug.

But for the gpu to hit 76c at 60hz at 1080 p is definitively not normal, but if I can reproduce it Ill update. So far its running 45 to 55c on max settings at 60hz. Only when I uncap my fps does it increase. And that is normal.

Looks normal, check your fan profile. Different game engines have different effect on heat, so if your fan kicks in later, means hotter...

Again, you are missing the issue.

1080p at 60hz shouldnt be running as hot as 1080p 240hz or 3440x1440 144hz.

It was a bug, and not been able to reproduce it. I know what fans kicking in means. I have been building pcs for over 20 years. Its the fact that the game was causing the GPU temps to increase without using more gpu power. GPU sitting at a set percentage usage wise and suddenly the temp would jump by 20c for no reason, with no power draw increase on the gpu.

Nothing else was sucking in power, I have multiple monitors and I am able to watch my specs as they increase and decrease as I am always making sure I have the best possible air flow. But it was a bug, until I can reproduce it, not much I can do.

yeah that is odd. Mine runs about 55-65c on games at 1440 and 60hz. Maybe set the fan profile and overlay to update more often? I set mine to 500ms. Maybe that will help. But like you said, you havent been able to get it to do it again. With a longer update interval you could see big spikes.

I havent changed anything on my pc and it now sits between 45c and 55c. The issue was on the first hour of gameplay. No issue since, If it happens again Ill be sure to capture the issue as it happens.

awesome thanks. The game is really fun, nice take on a modern looking rimworld

Played a little over an hour at max settings, 1440 locked at 60fps. 50-55 the whole time.
