They want to get to you, or the radar dish late game. They will only go so far out of their way to do that. When an attack happens move all you characters near the kill zone. In late game make sure there’s a kill zone close to each radar dish, otherwise the enemies will just break through your walls.

all my survivors stand as what you see in screenshot 1 before the wave starts its just besides the kill zone.
and there is no radar there.

Do you leave the gate open? I always leave the gate open to provide a unobstructed path for the mobs. This generally works, but occasionally a couple of guys will try to go through the wall. If need be, you can always have someone close the gate at the last minute.

You need a inner wall system also. The bugs will go to the kill zone if you put a inner wall around the house with it's opening at the kill zone also. I build it from inside to out. ring the house/ base and extend the kill zone out to what I want. then from the outside of the extended kill zone I make the outer ring. if you do this and all survivors are inside the inner fence (even in the house) they will come to the kill zone.

If I had corrosive acid at my disposal that can eat through walls in no time at all, I also would just go through the walls. Plus, these things *are* a bit slow. I actually like it that they do that. :)

The only thing I can guess is that your city walls are too large of an area, so the critters decide to ignore it. They will only go so far out of their way.
End game it's a crap shoot, and most of the time animals will ignore your kill boxes anyway. You're obviously not there yet, but just a heads up to expect this kind of thing later on

Your perimeter is waaaaay too big. It's too big to manage and a waste of wood. My base at its biggest was 30% the size of yours.

As a rule of thumb keep your perimeter "convex", i.e. no inward facing angles, just in case there are any AI "pathing" issues. For the bugs to head for your kill-zone, they must have unimpeded access to your survivors, so no gates or doors (open or closed) in that path and also don't crowd the path either, i.e. excessive flamethrowers or other stuff blocking the way.

I also noticed that, even when things look right, the bugs will attack anywhere there is a weakened, damaged or inferior fence. I had all fortifications except for a scrap metal door and they attacked that door as well as any previously damaged fence.

When I was starting out I had all wooden fortifications except for my back fence bordering the farm, it was OK but only a normal wooden fence. They attacked that fence because it was NOT a fortification.

Keep any machine-gun or laser turrets at the entrance to the kill-zone only. Anywhere else and they will attack the fence directly adjacent to the gun that fired on them.
Keep the kill-zone entrance flood-lit so you don't miss so much if an attack comes at night and place metal traps everywhere at the entrance of course.

I did make my entrance a simple zig-zag which lengthened the bugs travel time and increased the time they were in front of my guns.

Good luck!

an easy way to reduce your footprint is to only protect your building and power structures. It's easy to deal with any unlikely damage to your farms
