Think of them as a more aggressive version of skinbark spots.
As someone that considers attacks an important part of the game, I also thought eliminating nests were part of keeping attacks from escalating or getting a breather from attacks. It just made sense that these insects that didn't exist in the world between attacks, were coming from nests. Peaceful mode would be an entirely different game strategy that I'm not interested in but I'd like a chance to win the war against insects and learn and build things that help against toxic ash and solar flares without turning the game into a casual builder.
