Domesticating Ulfens?
Is there a way to domesticate these for food and furs?

Also, do they actually grow/mature over time like plants do?

Hey DX!

As others have pointed out, it's fully possible! Research Animal Taming, then Observe the Ulfen and select Tame once they're fully observed. You need their favourite food in order to tame them.

Once tamed, if you have two Ulfen (one male, one female), they will eventually breed and produce offspring. Once you have enough Ulfen you can slaughter as many as you want for Meat and Hide.

Also curious about this.

In their inspection panel it says 'Untrainable', and that they drop manure / fertilizer. Would be great if they could also be used as reliable source of food and hides.

Is fertilizer making a lot of difference to harvests?

Research animal taming, observe animal, and then find the appropriate food, I can't remember what's the exact food item, I think fruit berries(?), to tame it. Then you can ranch them. They do grow much bigger in your ranch.

Manure on the ground, observe it so you can use it to fertilize. Outside of base, you have to manually check the use option so your people can use them (Stored or directly fert the farms). Within base, it's auto-checked to use as the manure belongs to your tamed animals.... Select and look at the farm field details of the fert bonuses, different for different crops.

They grow and reproduce enough that I did not know what to do with all the meat and hides after a while. Growing is split into two progress bars. Growth (i.e., reaching adulthood) and fattening (from being well fed). I think a fully grown and fattened Ulfen gave me 120 meat and hides.

I had more meat and leather than I knew what to do with about half way through the game, so I just slaughtered my herd when I got sick of feeding them. Later on when you build a radio tower or two and have wild herds of 40+ Ulfen charging into your auto turrets, there is no point even allocating the labour required to keep their troughs full.
I guess If I wanted to be sadistic I could just keep a few herds near my base entrances just to slow down the bugs a little.

My guess is the Ulfren cannot be "trained" right now because it will be coming out in a future update (my guess. I have no proof that they will - just hoping they do). Well, not "trained" per se, but probably easier to handle or to put in new game mechanics, like hitching them to a plow, "bronco busting" (riding, with new injury and death mechanics for survivors), and possibly things like pulling a cart that can be filled with materials, or people. And it's possible some animals or bugs do not take to "handling" just well. Let us suppose that Ulfren are better at being manipulated to pulling carts than flathead bugs, but maybe flathead bugs can be ridden easier than Ulfren.

Again, I'm speculating. Take the ball and run with it.

Not my thread, but thanks all!

Lots of Ulfen around the camp and I haven't started hunting any animals yet. I haven't started producing armor, so thinking the leather will be handy. Also a big herd of those flathead animals moved into the map recently.

I've seen in other threads that the 'Shrieker' is handy to tame for protection / combat. What is this animal called before observing it, please? Are they one of the animals in the 'regular' base attacks, or are they roaming the wild?

Not sure if someone mentioned it, but bush berries is the tame food for them.

You want to slaughter one or two Ulfen just to get enough leather to make a punching bag (20 I think). Put it near to your dining table and you will find it is likely to be very popular. Also unlike the shooting target, each hit only does 1 point of damage, so it needs to be repaired way less often.

Thanks, already made a few from skin bark :) Or it may have been leather, as I remember hunting an animal early after all to get hides and red meat unlocked, for some reason. And I've cured some leather, so yes...

I've researched skin bark armor as well, but it's handy for floors. Also forgot to plant much, so I've just planted 2 new skin bark fields in the middle of winter... Only 240 on each field.

Bush berries is what you need to tame them. They will eat any kind of vegetable, plus grain and hay. The easiest food for them is hay; you can plant a big hayfield around their shelter, but mark it for "no harvest." The ulfens will keep eating from this field, which does have to be replanted from time to time to fill in the empty spaces.

They are regular green bushes with blue berries on them. They won't be labeled "Bush Berries" until one of your survivors has Observed it and identified it.
