Tips: If you're getting notices about them being unhappy, take steps to fix it. They need down-time (relaxation) so build that into the schedule. Same with sleep. Also a good idea to put "Anything" time periodically into each day's schedule so they can go eat or relax or take a nap if they need to.

Second, ensure they're getting good food, and at least a minimal amount of variety--even just honey + vegetable stew is enough to keep 'em from going too stir-crazy, but aim for more--melon pies are great and only require melons + grain to make. Go with Emelin and make her your cook because her meals are 'exquisite' and give +6 happiness every time they're eaten.

Also make sure they have recreation. I build a shooting target, punching post, and dart board as soon as I can, and when I unlock music, I put a digiridoo and pan-drum in the house. And speaking of a house, getting one built should be the #1 priority after securing a food supply. Separate bedrooms, the bigger the better, equals daily happiness.

Anyway, there are quite a few guides and youtube vids out there covering the early stages of making a viable settlement. I highly recommend taking 10-20m and view them.

Working scheduling is misleading because they will ignore their needs.

You should always have a "base mom" -- a character who specializes in just cooking and crafting. Set that character's cooking priority to 1 and their crafting to 2. Go the the stove/fire and set a quick meal of veggie/meat/grain soup to "until 3."

This automates the character to always cook a soup if they have the ingredients and there are just 2 left (meaning they'll make 2 more).

When they have done that, they'll craft anything at the bench. Crafting bandages from scrap cloth is a simple way to level up their crafting skill. I usually set scrap cloth bandages to forever at the crafting table. They should make winter clothes asap. Don't want winter to come, have a cold snap, and have everyone freeze to death.

The next character you need is an observer/researcher. You should probably research construction ASAP so you can make a decent house. There might be a couple of other techs you need too but construction is the one you want first. When you've got those, this person will observe plants so that you can get farming going. They should also observe before the research table is built.

The other 2 characters are going to salvage nearby wreckage for scrap metal and build a basic shelter, sleeping spots, firepit, storage shelves, table, chairs, and production stations. After that, they will harvest plants (leave one left! you need to observe it. If you see a purple, twisty plant -- harvest it and build a punching pole for recreation. They could also hunt if you prefer, though there's a small chance you get a charging bull and have to deal with injuries. When you have enough food for 2-3 days, they should start mining some stones (maybe about 100ish) and then they're going to cut down a ton of trees. When you have a lot of trees, construction should be done and one of them will be your builder. The other will continue to cut down trees and also deliver wood to the building site.

After that, you're going to want to setup a farm with a vege, a grain, and clothblossom. It doesn't really matter who does this but whoever has the highest farming should harvest it.

Those are your 3 milestones for winter -- have a house, have winter clothes, and have a farm. There are more detailed ways to do those three things more specifically, but this is already long enough and some of it is obvious (you need cloth to make clothes, so you need to find a ton in the wild, or get a farm ASAP)

Give it time. Its a small learning curve. My first few savegames had plenty of deaths. They still do die on me from time to time, but only because I do stupid stuff. LOL. To be fair though, I think about 5% is game related. For example, on one of my latest savegames, I picked a survivor that had dementia and didnt notice it at first. He eventually wandered away from my base and got lost and died. In the meantime, I somehow picked up another survivor, so I was back to 4. Not long after that, I got a notice an insect nest was close to my base so I decided to have them all attack and kill those insects. Bad move on my part. Haha. All survivors died in the battle except one and she was bleeding pretty bad. Haha.. Gosh I love this game. Never know what to expect. LOL. Since I started playing this game, I have probably restarted 6 times already...but each time, I learn more and things get easier. Dont give up. Keep trying and enjoy the experience :)
