PC overheating
A few days ago I noticed my fans working extra hard while playing, then today my PC completely shut down after about two hours of playtime. Anyone else experience this?

Actually I have with quite a few newer games lately .. when I complain to some of the game devs about it they are able to put out a fix .. when I ask them what the fix was so I can tell other gamer devs they are very cryptic about it. I don't know why. They said something about coding for frames per although I have my FPS locked at 60 im not sure the game is taking that into account in the code. There doesn't seem to be any real over heating when i check with speccy. Also when I try to tell some other devs that theres a problem with their game causing my video card to ramp up its fans and run like the wind.. they tell me its not their game its my card when I beg to differ they don't listen at all.

What are your temps? Modern PCs won't typically shut down from overheating, they will instead just run slower to stay cool.
DarkHorse Oct 23, 2022 @ 9:33pm
My Core temps are 123 fluctuating
Motherboard temp 93 steady
and graphics card 101 ...
Like I said its some coding issue but some devs listen and some don't

Maxing out @:
CPU - 81C (178F)
GPU - 67C (152F)

I'm running an AMD Ryzen 9 3900 XT and an RTX 3080 with other hardware on the same level. I haven't had this issue with other games personally.

Your CPU is @123 and GPU @101 ? if yes it will Kill it!

I mean we can try to mention it to the devs but after I kept gettin the cold shoulder I stopped trying to tell other devs. I usually just stop playing their game til they figure it out but i'm having too much fun with this one.

I'll see if i can find my post to the other devs and what they replied with.

Okay Just to be clear this was a problem I had with a similar ' newer ' title: Endzone : A world Apart.

This is the conversation. I'd also like to point out that I havn't actually spoke to the devs here and do not know how receptive they would be to the issue. I CAN say there is definitely a problem.

I'd also like to point out that I DID turn off V-sync in Stranded Alien and I also set my FPS to 60 which it says is at 60 when I play but I suspect its much higher.

Here is a short snippet of my system spex: SPECCY-

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 3770K @ 3.50GHz 129 °F
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 (CPUSocket) 92 °F
Graphics
M260VA (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (ASRock)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (Gigabyte) 103 °F
SLI Disabled
Storage
1863GB ATA ST2000DM001-1ER1 SCSI Disk Device (SATA )
232GB Samsung SSD 840 Series ATA Device (SATA (SSD)) 90 °F
Optical Drives
HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW UH12LS29 SCSI CdRom Device
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

As soon as shut off the game my cpu core and gpu core temps go back down to the 90s.

Here is my conversation with another developer for a DIFFERENT game.

Hello Devs. This is going to sound weird I think but you did fix the problem way back when I posted about it and created a new game. I am wondering though if you could maybe give me an idea of what you did because you are not the only dev's out there and when I try to tell them about the problem they have with their game (becuase it is not all the games I play and you DiD indeed fix the problem) They keep telling me that its my problem but I know its not. Somehow you have either coded a better way to limit FPS or have given us the ability to set a max FPS in the game settings. Can you leave a short response on what you did .. so i can copy and paste it to another dev forum? I realize this is a strange request so if I fall on def ears I'm not going to freak out about it.

Actually we did a lot of different things starting with the optional frame capping, as well as defaulting to 60hz frame cap when a high refresh rate monitor is detected and a lot of very specific rendering optimizations. A very common issue I suspect a lot of games have that could cause overheating is because of the unlimited FPS and the absurdly high refresh rates and high resolutions of some of today's gaming monitors. This is a problem that slowly crept in the gaming space and I suspect only very experienced game studios really recognize beforehand, because it is caused by peripherals (instead of internal hardware). At least, we didn't suspect it would pose such an issue until it caught us off guard.

That's not hot enough to be thermal throttling, and as I said overheating doesn't shut down the system. What is your PSU? RTX 3080s can have huge transient spikes that can trigger OCP on a power supply. This is what would shut your system down.

Its your fault for letting your frame rate shoot to insane numbers you don't need.

Your GPU draws more power than you need.

The RTX 30 series is the start of the "hot and power hungry" trend for Nvidia because they cant compete at a cool level.

I really don't think its his pc .. I have a completely different video card with the same problem. Its some problem in the coding for the Frames .....as suggested by a dev from the game I posted above.

Personally I found High Spec just as good as Ultra Spec - Ultra does chunk up the heat a ton.

Here we go .. its funny that its my fault but other devs for different games fixed it ....

Actually try to diagnose the problem yourself using tools. Rather than hoping someone will magically fix it.
Indrid Oct 23, 2022 @ 11:19pm
That dev only talked about uncapped framerates (usually when in menus and things) causing increased load, solved by using V-Sync or capping framerate. This topic creator's PC fully shut down after two hours. Not the same thing.

Other devs caan fix things but it generally means foolproofing their code against people who might llet their hardware loose and whine about complications.

I'm using RX 6600 XT and it runs smoothly because 1080p is all I need.
This game isn't doing any wonders or immersion at 4k 120 fps and whatnot if your 3080 is overheating.
