problems getting fuel
I am on my 4th playthrough and for the life of me cannot figure out how to get fuel now. Before there was a research to get fuel from bugs through a fermenting barrel but this time there isn't a research option for it. Also for some reason I am unable to get any leathers from my meat drying racks and there's been plenty of meat drying all the time.
Probably going to just start a new game from scratch again and see what happens

Same. Had the fuel fermentation in two playthroughs so far, but my current game hasn't had it, and I've no idea what unlocks it, I assume a discovery somewhere.

Only fuel I can make is at the workbench, which means someone having to hand craft it.

also what plant gives "grains"
I keep looking through current map and have observed everything I've found and still no grains

Grains are the corn combs or the long grass, sometimes hard to see.
When you have grain, you can science fuel fermentation.

The bug one has been on every playthrough start I've done so far. I think a lot of the research only opens up once you actually harvest the item in question.

I have been crafting grain or insect meat oils in oil press then crafting fuel from that on wood workbench

some research only opens on foot of an event. for me the bug fermentation process was unlocked after investigating/exploring a distress signal which turned out to be a damaged alien craft

The best way to get fuel is to salvage the ships.
There is research that allows it, but it is extremely random if you get it or not.

There's several versions, turn insect parts into fuel, grain into fuel, animal fats into fuel etc..

Grain is found in 2 variants. Tall Grass which looks like dark patches in the grass meadows. Usually lower down. Also as Corn can be found in lower areas, looks like a little corn plant.

You need to observe them to get access.

My current playthrough I have struggled immensely with fuel production. Very sad thing is I did not scavenge any fuel from ships thus far and I'm currently going into my 2nd winter. I only have the bug meat>fat>fuel method in place.

Grain into vegetable oil into fuel.

Meat into fat into fuel.

Oil press is the key to unlocking most of these recipes. The breakthrough to turn bug meat directly into fuel is probably one of the better unlocks. If you don't have it it can be quite annoying and time consuming as its several different crafting recipes to get to a single production of fuel and this game does not handle the AI very well.

grain>vegetable oil>liquid fuel

Fuel production now seems to be my bottleneck. I don't have the breakthrough, so have to do the oil/fat to fuel manual crafting instead, which ties up people (constant growing/hunting/crafting).

I'm now into late game tech (everything researched), and you need huge amounts of fuel if you want to build anything with carbon, and there are no nests even remotely close to my base to fetch it directly.

I also didn't get the balloon fuel breakthrough, so it's still 30 fuel for an exploration trip for me as well!

There is a discovery of a grain that gives twice the output per plant than the plant you find in the wild does. Much more efficient to grow. I think I found it exploring an expedition.

Grain grass, takes a little longer to grow than the Graincob (12 days instead of 9), but yealds 20 instead of 10 grain at harvest.

So minor spoiler I guess.

The nest hives can be mined for carbon. Each nest is worth a few thousand carbon. You really shouldn't craft it ever.

I think you missed the 'and there are no nests even remotely close to my base to fetch it directly.'

I'm on year 6, and I've had a grand total of one nest spawn even remotely close to my base, so managed to get a few 100 out of that one.

The couple I can find, are quite a scroll away to get to, over mountains etc. Really wish there was a map/mini-map! A vehicle would be nice.

Specific scavenging missions would be good also, rather than coming back with yet more scrap metal I don't really need.
