I am not aware of the nests playing any part in any attack in any way. They may and maybe I have just never seen it but I have 3 games over 4 years and have never interacted with nests except to mine them afterwards.
If someone thinks otherwise then I will not dispute their observation but I have never seen them do anything but guard the nest.

Ah excellent, I stand corrected.
I will say that when you get to nanotubes, the 3D printing doesn't take long and is relatively low cost. I've got scrap metal coming out of my ears and making fuel from the insect attacks gives me more than enough products to make the nanotubes. It's also a handling job, which is nice, and you can get a breakthrough tech which allows you to 3d print other things, which reduces crafting load a fair bit.
