Which means, that this game is multiplayer arena shooter. You play here gamemodes, like deathmatch, where you get points for killing enemies, capture the flag, where there are two teams, red and blue, and you try to steal the opposite's team flag and bring it to your flag. In this gamemode you also have to protect your flag.
And then there is my favourite mode, Assault, which again has two teams, where one has to complete some objectives and opposite one has to prevent the completion of these objectives.
And death in this game works that if you die, you just respawn in some random place (or your team's base).
You can play this game in singleplayer against bots (AI - computer players), where you can choose difficulty level for bots. You can also let game automatically adjust this difficulty level to your skills (so if you will win some matches, difficulty will rise up, etc.). And in Singleplayer, there is also "Tournament mode", which is same as normal game, but here you choose a character and team and then play maps in predefined order. And in this mode you can only choose your difficulty level during starting the new game.
And then there is multiplayer, in which you of course can't choose difficulty level of your human opponents :-) . But there isn't almost any difference between multiplayer and singleplayer.
But of course, there are many mods to this game, even singleplayer campaigns. So it's worth to check this website for mods.
If I was to recommend you some singleplayer mods, it's worth to check Operation Na Pali, maybe Nali chronicles, and even through it is unfinished and little buggy, Unreal Zenith. But there are another knowns singleplayer mods, like 7 bullets, etc...
But if you want just play the vanilla game, either in singleplayer or multiplayer and you don't want to play any single player mods (or multiplayer), then I'd recommend you to get Unreal tournament 2004 instead, as this game has much more content, though it has more colourful graphics and faster pace than this game.
Or if you are more into singleplayer game, then should also check Unreal, as this game is old school fps with singleplayer campaign, but unlike Unreal Tournament it has worse multiplayer.
No, there are many small hosted servers with different game modes, listened or dedicated and you can even host your own (if you forward your ports and open them on firewall). And that means that you can play multiplayer either online, or even on your LAN (or offline against bots).
Also the maps, or better say arenas, are small, unlike mmos or open world games.
I don't know how many max. players can be in multiplayer, but in single player match (botmatch) there can be max. I think 16 bots, so not much players like in MMO.
Though as this game is old, many servers can be empty, but I didn't watched it for long time so maybe somebody else will tell you how this game is alive (or isn't) in multiplayer...
