How to install Unreal GOTY99 on Windows 10?
May I request instructions on how to install Unreal GOTY '99 on Windows 10? I just bought on Steam, not having much luck in windows 10. Basically the game starts with a black background, then I see blue "precaching" and nothing else happens. I hear the background music, but no graphics. I tried all changing the graphics types from D3D to openGL, software, none will work. The only way I can get it to work is when I relaunch it, it gives the error that it did not run properly and give the open to run in safe mode. That actually will load and run, but is windowed and I can only get a max of 800X600 resolution. I thought that safe mode basically runs the software rendering so I dont' know why it wont run at least in software rendering. Can someone help me out?

After I download from steam what other installtion steps, patches, etc do I need to follow?

You need to make sure you're not running OpenGL, and install DirectX 8 on your computer. It will be overriden by DX11 but still helps with issues. Then googled 'an enhanced UT renderer' and install Direct3D9 (not 10). That should help to start. If that doesn't, post an error message here.

That's blind advice. Just install DirectX 9 provided by about any other steam game here. DX9 also includes runtimes for all prior versions of DirectX.

You may have to change your aspect ratio in unrealtournament.ini

I now have everything working Unreal GOTY '99 on Win10. I learned to follow the below steps for Windows 10. Thanks for everyone's help, input.

http://www.kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/#supportedgames

I used Unreal engine Direct3D 10 renderer
1) Downloads
The current version is v29. Download: d3d10drv-v29.zip. Install required DirectX update: dxwebsetup.exe. Install required VS2010 runtimes: vcredist_x86.exe.

2) Installation and settings

Unzip the files for the game you're playing to that game's 'system' directory. Examples of this are 'C:\Deus Ex\System' and 'D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Deus Ex\System'. You should end up with a 'd3d10drv.dll' file in said System directory, and a 'd3d10drv' subdirectory with various other files.
Start the game, go into its video options, and click the the renderer selection button. The game should restart and allow the Direct3D 10 renderer to be picked (make sure to select "Show all devices").
That should be all.

i actually used the opengl on windows 10 as i did not realize i need to put the direct3D on 32 bit color for it to run right. direct 3d actually behaves a lil different. some corners are see thru lines. both are really dark. brightness doesnt change. i just hit tab or ~ and type rmode 6 (or rmode 7) in the console for the super dark maps. rmode 5 to go back to normal for the brighter maps. I did not mess with any .ini files or download any community patches. the game runs fine. most people on windows 10 just need to switch to 32-bit color in the preferences video setting when using direct3d.

Thank you for your helpful feedback.
This is not directx issue.

Get Opengl from here:

For Unreal Tournament (version 4.36 or compatible):
The latest stable OpenGL renderer is version 3.6: utglr36.zip (110 KB).

http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/

Then delete unrealtournament.ini, and start up UT. you will get the updated opengl driver. automaticly.

Kentoo's fix is not adviced as it bassically uses a different system and emulates the different opengl and d3d versions.

Since 2019, It's highly recommend to install the "Oldunreal" (this is just the name of the website) patch for Unreal Tournament 99 now. It's officially endorsed by Epic, and properly fixes many things including renderer performance & off-center crosshair + comes with Raw mouse input support.

Keep in mind, Oldunreal patch will change the UT99 game version to v469.
