Random Starter attacking self??

In Random Starter supposed to be killing yourself with random moves?
I thought it would be targeting enemies with attacks and maybe self/allies if the random was beneficial. So far just been attacks, and just on the user, even when it is whole enemy team attacking move.

was it against one of the dlc bosses? because those have machine curse which reflects your attacks if you use something like random starter

Machine Curse causes your mons to use their Custom Starter and Random Starter (and some others) moves on themselves. I know the bosses in the DLC have it, but I haven't seen it on any main-game monsters.

No. Just any old fight. It is a rare with +6% Effect chance per empty slot, +26% Effect chance, and Passive: +3% Ranged Attack. If this is unexpected behavior, I'll risk trying another Random Starter, see if just that one is bugged.

Ah ha, tried another and then the rare again and it worked right, then went to the character it was on before and they had Machine Curse redirecting it to themselves. Thanks for the help!
Seems like Machine Curse and Starters doing that would be a bug. Hadn't noticed issues with other friendly passives.

not a bug. text says it reflects all damage and effects caused by other passive moves onto the user not specifying just enemies.

Edit: note the wording. it reflects these effects onto whoever used them so passives that don't do anything to enemies work as intended.
