Staaaaaaars...
[puts Resident Evil 3 away]

In all seriousness, I looked in the tutorial, but I can't seem to find any kind of indication on an answer to this. Apologies if it's already been asked, but I scrolled back several pages and couldn't find anything.

What governs when a tape gains a star? Is it linked to leveling up? If so, that would suggest that there's a limited amount of stars that can be gained. Is it linked to story progress? Have I somehow just missed something incredibly obvious?

Also, unrelated, I just got a rare sticker that grants "13% chance of (three stars)". Any idea what that means?

Any help that can be provided here would be very useful.

1) Stars use the same EXP mechanics as leveling up, but it's tracked separately and keeps going even if you're level 200 (the limit). It also keeps going if your tape is already at 5 stars, giving you random eligible stickers each additional fill.

2) I think that's the Cottoned On status effect otherwise exclusive to the Bansheep line. It makes it so that the next attack on you that can potentially miss will definitely miss. This is a lot more useful on the Bansheep line itself due to their other signature sticker passively boosting evasion based on missing health (so there's going to be a chance of enemies missing whenever you need it).

The numeric level is the human's level. Beasts/Monsters don't have a numeric level.

Instead, beasts have a star rating that starts at zero and caps at a max of five stars. When a beast is at five stars, the experience bar for gaining more stars will continue to level/rank up to produce more stickers per star-up but the amount of stars shown won't exceed five. The experience bar to gain more stars is simultaneous with the numeric level experience bar for the humans. I don't know what the rate of experience toward earning more stars is.

The second question about a status effects with the picture of three stars: https://wiki.cassettebeasts.com/wiki/Cottoned_On
The name of this status effect is "Cottoned On" and it's a buff that causes the user to avoid incoming attacks during the next turn. This status effect is ignored by attacks whose accuracy is "Unavoidable" instead of being a shown percentage or the default accuracy of 100%. There's not many accuracy checks that have the value "Unavoidable" so in general what the status effect does is give you a turn of 100% evasion.
