Gameplay is great. Finding synergy is fun, learning the system is fun.
Difficulty is average. On default difficulty, you can't do stupid \*\*\*\* and win against the bosses, you need to have some synergy going on around midgame to come out on top. Items are absurdly powerful: use the potions freely, they cost next to nothing. Some bosses will _require_ counterplay in order to win, you are expected to lose against some of them once and reformulate.
Weaknesses can be found on the wiki. You don't do more/less damage; instead, the defender gets buffs/debuffs.
The accusation that 100%ing the game is a horrific grindfest is absolutely true, but it's also optional. You can stop upon arriving at postgame and get your money's worth.
I finished the game a couple of days ago, and this could word for word sum up my experience.
This game is great, I would absolutely say it's worth it.
