Does anybody have any tips on bootleg hunting?

I'm interested in getting an astral traffikrab and am wondering about the least painless way to do this. I know the ritual candle can be used to increase my chances of encountering traffikrab in fussions (which have a higher percentage of bootlegs). Is there anything else that can help?

You have two ways to go about it. But both use save scumming. Turn off Auto Saves in the menu, and understand that the game autopopulates the rogue fusions at the start of each in game day, so loading a save won't change what's already spawned for that in game-day. From that point, burn a candle and a tape, and just start fighting Rogue fusions, Alt+F4ing out if it's not an astral Trafikrab, then trying a new one each time.

1. Burn a Trafikrabb and then hope it spawns an Astral Variant, doing it this way you can check ALL rogue fusions that spawn each in game day, but then you have way more randomness on whether or not it'll be a Trafikrabb + Astral.

2. Burn an Astral tape and then search areas where Trafikrabbs can spawn, then hope that it spawns an Astral Trafikrabb. As long as you only search Rogue Fusions in areas where Trakikrabbs can spawn, this has less randomness then the first way.

Personally I did the 2nd way, and it took me about an hour or two before I got my Astral Traffickrab.

If you want to reduce the randomness some more, remember that fighting a fusion, then running away will NOT despawn the fusion, AND that fusion will stay the same. Doing so will let you avoid going blind and hoping for a traffikrab to be in this fusion : just get into fights with fusions (where traffikrabs spawn), and when you find a fusion with a traffikrab in it, simply run away without killing it and sacrifice an astral monster.

Of course there's a chance the astral type gets tacked onto the OTHER monster, or that the monster SPECIES is changed rather than the type, but you'll at least save some time by not going into a fusion blind.

What is the strategy for getting a bootlegged Kuneko using the candle? I'm not quite sure how to execute the process with the information you two provided.

for bootleg hunting i simply:

1. use the candle and recycle the thing you want
2. disable autosave in the settings
2.2. i also recommend turning down level scaling as it can be a pain to record with strong enemies
3. find a rogue fusion
3.2. i'd suggest avoiding miss mimic, as i've lost the candle's effect this way without seeing any bootlegs
4. manual save
5. enter battle with the rogue fusion
6. if the bootleg is not something you want, either flee the battle and quit to menu or close and reopen the game, reload your save, and repeat from step 3

since you're saving after each fusion has already appeared, you will have to do a little waiting around to find a new rogue fusion each time, but the candle's effect will persist as long as you don't save after a battle with one
