Press A to start not working on Steam Deck

I am unable to actually start the game as when I press A nothing is registering. Any suggestions?

PS5 controller doesn't work properly either. I switched to proton and it works.

I am having this same issue with the 8BitDo controller docked. What Proton did you swap to? @Daft.Eng?

Update - just tested swapping to forced compatibility - ProtonGE and my 8bitdo ultimate controller (Bluetooth) is now working as expected!

i still have the same issue and my steam deck is up to date + rebooting didn't do anything either unfortunately. it just won't work with a controller.

FYI of you still haven't sorted this, I just ran into the same thing, saw this thread, and just forced the latest Proton from Glorious Eggroll to get it working again. Same as Elite Four Drake above me.

Heads up, another fix for this is starting the game and dropping out, then joining with the desired controller.

I have a very similar experience with my official Xbox wireless controller. :(

Pressing A does do anything. If I disconnect the controller and reconnect, it tells me to press A again to continue, but again, nothing. My controller seems to allow me to move the mouse pointer with the right thumbstick and select what I'm hovering over by depressing the right thumbstick, but that's all I can do.

I've tried to switch to other controller configurations, but neither the Casette Beast's official configuration or the generic Steam gamepad layouts do anything after they've been assigned to the game. Same right thumbstick controls.

I've also tried just running the game via Big Picture mode, starting up with my controller, and same result.

I'm confounded. How do I play with a damn controller?

Switch to latest proton seems to enable external gamepad
