controller not working

iv restarted game several times set game to controller control and still just does not work

I know I'm months late, but the controller does work if it's a Microsoft Xbox controller. About 96% of the time. So what that means is the main screen title, pause menu, inventory, shop and workbench all require you to use mouse (and/or keyboard for shop & workbench).

The rest is supported by any modern Microsoft controller. Hopefully the devs patch in full support at some point. To get that right analog stick to move the mouse cursor and use the action button to confirm or a different face button to cancel. That'd be nice.

steamdeck and box controls dont work either. not even emulating keyboard and mouse. unplayable sadly

i can not see to pick up items with the controller verry well it does not give me a x prompt to do so

Do you see a tiny white dot on the screen that is over your character? Line that up with any item you want to pick up, collect, or use via the right analog stick. A prompt should appear. Usually showing a Raccoon hand icon.

There's one exception, and that's the wire trap in the construction site that never prompts you outside of the tutorial for it (which uses RT for some bizarre reason).
