How do you get gears? where are they?

Did you ever find the answer to this? I'm currently stuck trying to build the wardrobe and can't locate gears anywhere...

I've got it! There are 2 or 3 backpacks in the car shop. While you're asked to pick up two, you only actually bring back one of them. When you go to build the wardrobe you've already run out of gears, so you need to go back to the car shop and pick up a second backpack. BUT, the only way it'll recognize you've picked up the backpack is if you skate back to the junkyard and go over to the area where you fixed the crane with that one raccoon. It'll finally register in your inventory when you walk up to the crane.

I built a second platform to put the wardrobe on top, and was short on gears for the next build task later in the story. Fortunately the game let me destroy/refund it, but it left the wardrobe hanging int he air. After I built the story task, there was a new repeatable quest to get gears from the same auto shop, so I got more and rebuilt the platform.
