How to purchase?

What is the mechanic to actually purchase from the merchant smith? I am starting out and have to purchase potato seeds. I speak to the merchant, I see I have enough gold. I select the number of seeds I want. "Purchase" doesn't become actionable.

(my apologies for such a basic question, I can't seem to figure out what to press/do in order to purchase - probably will have to ask how to farm right after...)

He takes potato as currency. There are other merchant in front of him that take gold.

I just started. Do you mean the person directly in front of the merchant?
That person just tells me that i can buy stuff from the merchant but isn't a merchant themselves.

one of the merchants in that little starter town uses potatoes as currency, the other merchant uses gold

The merchant that uses potatoes as currency is in front of 4 farming plots and a farmer. The cash merchant is across from him at the camp fire. All towns have both merchants. but each vegi merchant will take a different vegi as payment

I found this to be very confusing as well. NPC tells you to buy from the merchant close by, but he refuses to sell. I don´t recall, isn´t he even tagged "Farming Merchant"?
The NPC the game actually wants you to talk to, is standing on the other side, opposite from the one who refuses to cooperate.
