As the others have said, you need to buy potato seeds from the coin-based merchant, then use them to buy stuff from the farm merchant. Don't destroy the fields if you decide to pick them up and move them; you can currently only get fields by buying them with produce, and I don't know if you can get produce very easily without farming it.
As far as potato and coin symbols go... they only look similar if you pay no attention to them imo, most of the confusion comes from what I said above - people expect that the only noticeable vendor would use coins when they actually use potatoes and the other vendor that they are actually looking for doesnt look like a vendor
