The one you are trying to buy from takes potatoes as currency. There's a second one who sells random stuff and potato seeds. He takes coin as currency. He is behind a table with an armor stand to the right of him.

Thats because you are at the farm merchant, not the proper merchant - do a 180 degree turn look at the two guys behind tables and talk to the one on the right

@King DaMuncha If you look the price is not a coin, but a potato. As darkcynic said, you are at the wrong merchant.

While using things other than coins to buy items is a cool idea, I wish the first farm vendor used a different vegetable. The potato icon looks too much like a bent coin. It's far easier to tell which vendors require items in the later villages.

As the others have said, you need to buy potato seeds from the coin-based merchant, then use them to buy stuff from the farm merchant. Don't destroy the fields if you decide to pick them up and move them; you can currently only get fields by buying them with produce, and I don't know if you can get produce very easily without farming it.

I agree that the potato does look like the coins a bit too much, I see how it could be confusing, I was as well when I started the other day.

Rather than that my issue is that I wish the girl asking you to buy potato seeds stood next to the merchant that sells them so as to make it obvious.. as it is at a glance the only one that looks like a vendor of any kind is the farmer stall that uses potatoes as a currency while the actual merchant and the other guy he stands next to look more like some sort of soldier types discussing plans.

As far as potato and coin symbols go... they only look similar if you pay no attention to them imo, most of the confusion comes from what I said above - people expect that the only noticeable vendor would use coins when they actually use potatoes and the other vendor that they are actually looking for doesnt look like a vendor

Heck, even if they just used a similar stall for the coin merchant as to what the potato one uses it would probably solve the issue
