It's really powerful at shield breaks though if you like a counter style gameplay. It's not meant to ungabunga.

Dodge roll ("C" on keyboard) to go back to natural stance.

If you want to unequip it, you should know how to do that since you were able to equip it and change weapons in the first place.

Yeah I played with a katana for a while and got comfortable with it. You get used to pressing C a lot to sheathe the sword and put it away. Katanas are basically the shield busters, keeping enemies in perpetual stun lock. The jump slash knocks enemies up too which is good for interrupting them. Sprint+attack is powerful. The left click+attack is the strongest counter attack but only if you can nail the timing.

Unfortunately thats where the praise ends. I swapped to magic eventually because the games combat favors range, mobility, and the dodge roll. You can still get the skills for i-frames with crouching and jumping however.

I was sooo excited when I saw they had a Katana in the game, but so disappointed in using it. I couldnt figure out how to sheath it, other than going into my crafting menu. I really hope they change that.

Most katana right click slashes are iframes.
Basically you fight with a katana by countering ennemies attacks (iframe-hit them while they try to hit you).
Those counters stack up a special buff that increase your katana damages and improve the amount of hits the base left click combo attack deal.
At each stage of the buff stacks, you get access to new rush attacks that consumme those stacks by pressing both left and right click at the same time.
Each of these rush attacks are iframes.

You can compare it to dual wield rush attack system, difference being that katana ignore part of the ennemies defense (hard parts take same amount of damages as weak spot, so you dont need to aim for those weak spot) and katana do full damage with skills (DW only do up to 60% of the skill damages when maxed).

Some skills also have a special effect when used in certain postures (e.g.: iai slash is instant when in the sheated posture, same for litghning slash).

What's tricky to get used to with a kanata is that what buttons do change depending on your posture (sheated or unsheated).
Also you cant jump attack with a katana (jump attack is just a basic unarmed kick, so it only benefit from relevant skills).

Katana is extremely good with back water formation and iai slash once you're confident in using his iframe capabilities (e.g.: you can iframe trough a red dragon breath for massive counter damages).
When using attack skills (iai slash, lightning slash) you can also use mana syphon... combining both (mana siphon+ backwater formation) gives a tremendous damage buff for iai slash.

Also katana have some specific passive buffs making it very powerfull....

Another drawback is that katana require lot of both mana and stamina to shine.... so with low HPs, you need a good iframe mastery.

Katana isnt for the casual or the faint of heart, it require expert swordmanship.

You have to Sheath the Katana to unequip it. The Katana does different actions depending if it's Sheathed or Unsheathed. The unsheathed version is not the default version to take it off.

- The unsheated posture give access to the highest damage slashes, but those arent iframes.
In that posture you can unequip the katana, you need to sheat it first.
Jumping in that posture is a special move that can send light ennemies upward in the air
You can no longer run in that posture, only walk. If you try to sprint, it will sheat your katana and so change your posture.

- The sheated posture slashes are all iframe.
In that posture you can put down the katana then unequip it.
You can no longer use the jump or walk action action in that posture, only sprint.

The action of sheating the katana back in his scabbard is also an iframe.... so the good use of a katana is to slash from sheated posture then immediately sheat it back (the slash from sheated posture is also an iframe) and do it repeatedly.

You can easily tell which actions are iframe because some sort of blue flame appear around the katana when performing iframe actions with it.

Yeah Katana was a lesson on how to pay attention to controls, it works incredibly well as a counter and boss fight weapon. But if your not sheathing it you're setting yourself up for frustration.

Tapping dodge will sheath it, you can dash while you have it drawn for a charge-like attack. But it's very, counter-focused weapon where you time your unsheathing just as they attack to maximize it and even negate the damage they might do to you at the same time. It was a very fun weapon to use against the Satyr.
