The Autocrafter is generally faster at crafting then it's lesser crafting tools, But not so much as to be a big deal if your automating it anyway. (my opinion)
However i am right there with you, i'd much rather setup a much smaller system than deal with the large and very much annoying auto-crafter....
pros :
+ faster (relatively) to process each item
+ cheaper to craft
cons :
- bulky, takes a lot more space in both horizontaly and vertically
- one item at a time
- up to 5 temporary inventory slot (max 2k items) to store unprocessed items
setting #2:
pros :
+ more outcome at a time, as much as the crafting station you've put, while the setting #1 might already resulted 2 items, setting #2 could give you more than 3 items
+ compact, you can place them anyhow you want
+ more temporary storage before entering the crafting stations depending on what kind of storage you're using as the temporary.
cons :
- definitely more expensive to craft, you will need to craft absorbers, droppers, and craft connectors
those are my opinions..
