Cant buy potato from the first merchant.

Are you sure you're at the money merchant and not the one that only accepts potatoes as payment?

Correct, you need to first buy the seeds for the quest and to plant from the merchant on the right side of the village by the bridge. The merchant by the plots only accepts potatoes as currency.

theirs TWO merchants, ones wants coin the other wants potatos, make sure your at the correct merchant

this is soo confusing. ok so i didnt know about the 2 merchants till now. So i managed now to buy seeds, went to plant on field so right clicked on field to plant and it used the seed but still grew wheat? the only field thats available is wheat field so where do you get other types from?
Also i lost all the seeds i used on said field as it takes them away, so more stuff lost.

you need a farming plot, not a wheat field. wheat fields only grow wheat
there are 4 farming plots right by the potato merchant (the one that accepts potatoes as payment, not the seed seller)

In that first village there is a farmer working a hoe. It is a fenced in area with 4 farm spots.

You can plant and water the potatoes there.

Note you also can pick up the plots and place there somewhere else as well.
