While I do not normally use Steam for connections whenever alternatives exist, I will try to give a little helpful information here.
My thought without further investigation is that a port is being used that isn't part of Steam's normal setup, so it will need to be forwarded/opened for your connection to succeed, After a brief look online I found this information from about 2 years ago...
Craftopia - Steam Ports used...
TCP: 27015, 27036
UDP: 6587, 27015, 27031-27036
.... OR ....
(Possible alternate ports... TCP/UDP 8787-8790)
Make sure you set a password for the Steam session where offered.
If all else fails, consider using a tunneling app like Hamachi to make the connection simple. You and your friend both install the tunneling app, contact each other through that, then go play your game... no further issue.
I hope this information is helpful.
As for myself, I simply selected the IP hosting option so I could select the ports myself in the dialogue. I have hosted servers privately for a small community of people around my age for a few decades now, so I am used to having the control at my end - on my hardware,
I was running a dedicated Craftopia server, but it looks like I have to wait until at least September for the updated dedicated server software to be released, allowing me to go back to that method on my server hardware.
Have fun,

Once host confirms the fresh session is hosted, the rest of the players can then try joining.
My friends and I were having this issue but once everyone rebooted the game, we were able to join this way.
Literally this. Do this and your multiplayer will work. Both player's/All players, close the game. The host, loads up the game for steam connections (while showing online on steam), Then you (host) have to be in the game and able to run around, then your friends can join you.
Now, If your friends load into their world, then try to join yours, they won't be able too. Everyone will have to close their games and reload the game, if you have a friend who wants to go back and forth from their world to your hosted game, to grab items or whatever nonsense.
Best idea is, all start on new characters, and only use that character on your friends world / Don't bother switching to grab items from your world, that's what causes the issues.
When you load into an instance, say, single player, your game is then only set for single player loads, until you close the game. And if you try to join a multi-player game, you will bug everyone out, and they will all have to reset their game, to go back into playing. It's been a bug for 2+ years, nothing new.
