agree, these Dragon are likeliy mini Boss'es and sucks most even with a helicopter they almost wont fly back with the huge aggro range they have, all i can recommend you to keep distance and they wont charge at you :/
However, I'm looking forward to that big update today, bringing features like difficulty settings. I like to play this game to chill out a bit, for challenge I have games like Grim Dawn, Hades or Gunfire Reborn^^
like i just chased 5 dragons in a single run on the Vulcano.
Level does'nt mean much this Game,
i killed with my lvl 37 Char a level 100 Executioner
Biggest point to criticize is basically the fact that you can have dragons on early game maps.
Where's the f***n point in that?
The dragon always spawns in the same spot, on the same islands. It is very easy to avoid once you have seen it spawn once on that type of map, because it always spawns in the same spot.
As for the fight with the dragon, you can dodge roll all of its damage quite easily even without buffed stamina. So at lower levels the fight really just takes time. It took me about 5-10 minutes to kill the dragon the first time. I think I was lvl 17, and the dragon was lvl 19. I had gear without any enchantments and no bow, just a two handed sword.
If that is too tedious for you you can simply avoid the dragon by not getting in aggro range (they play boss music when you get in aggro range, and you can simply walk back and loose aggro) or you could even avoid the entire island (desert islands). But I don't recommend it because you can easily navigate 80% of the island without pulling aggro.
The reason the dragon needs to be on islands of a low level is because it is by far the fastest, easiest, and best way to get better gear. The iron ore the dragon drops is just way too good to not use it on every single build. And it also gives higher level characters a good way to farm the ore by one shotting low lvl dragons over and over.
