Game using a colossal amount of memory
When I first got the game, it was using a reasonable amount of memory for playing the game, about 2 gigabytes or so... now, in singleplayer, even starting a brand new world, it's suddenly using 4 gigabytes of memory or more despite no settings being changed. Can someone please explain why the game suddenly is using so much memory when before it didn't? There should be no reasonable explanation for this and I'm worried perhaps there is a drastic memory leak bug in the game that desperately requires a fix, since it doesn't seem to be resolving with quitting the game and starting it back up.

As for the topic:

There are legitimate reasons why RAM usage could balloon. Changes to the way the world data is structured in the game code / how packed it is, changes to how data is allocated or deallocated from memory, and changes to when objects are written to or read from disk are some examples of things that could impact both performance and RAM usage. In general, it's a balancing act to keep RAM, VRAM, and CPU usage low. Less RAM usage is better in general, so a reduction of the amount of RAM used would be good, if possible.

However, as a personal anecdote, the game does run significantly smoother than when I bought it. This could be a product of Proton improving, but I feel like it's also a product of the devs' optimization efforts. Good on them for getting it this smooth - it's not perfect, but it's definitely, noticeably, widely better. I remember Craftopia playing almost exactly the same on Windows as on Linux previously (which was poor, around sub-20 FPS at times, I believe). Now, though, I'm getting a much higher and much more consistent FPS rate (30-40 FPS), which is great.

Hopefully they'll see about dropping RAM usage as the game develops; it is an early access game, and there probably is a lot more that they could do to optimize it, even now.

It's worth noting that the store page lists Craftopia as requiring 8GB of memory, so I'd imagine that would be their target for memory usage. I don't know if that has changed since early access launch, but I think that would be the baseline to assume comfortable play.

It's also worth remembering that early access means the game is not finished, and so as the game is developed and the developers see what's feasible, it's entirely possible system requirements rise as they work to add content and improve existing features while keeping things optimized.

SolarLune, I appreciate your in-depth answer about the matter and personally I hope that they drop the RAM usage that isn't needed. The game running at about 4.4gb of ram on the starting island had me worried that it was going to make a colossal jump to more than 8 if I went to a bigger location with more enemies or took on a boss. I have 16 gb of ram on this computer so I should be fine but all the same, I don't think the base starting island should be using that much RAM but more close to the 2 gb range that it originally was.

Still, I'll mark your post as the answer to my question and just hope the devs continue to optimize the game and improve upon it as time goes on.
