The new Kill the Past Trial
A very strange Trial. It literally doesn't set any goals, but you have to take out 10~ boxes in 5 minutes. However, if you drop less, an escape will be triggered. What happens if you take them all? What's the point?
And by the way, have you noticed that there are inscriptions on many of the walls? Could this mean something..?

Did you miss the part where the announcer says "difficulty number" depending on how many boxes were left? The more boxes you bring, the easier the escape will be. The difficulty level is indicated by the remaining boxes that you failed to grind. However, it is not clear to me how the difficulty is affected at all

Fewer enemies spawn on easer difficulties

I think it’s the number of enemies on the way to the exit. I did a run with difficulty level 1, and I only encountered a random machete guy and Coyle at the end (Coyle is probably always there, no matter what).

If you managed to destroy every boxes, you will not encounter any enemies at all (even Coyle). Also, you will skip straight to sector C instead of going through A.

Regarding the phrases on the wall: apparently, this is the teaser of the new Prime Aset, which will be released in the second season, probably in the spring.

Does this mean that the difficulty variator doesn't matter then?

the difficulty variator probably only affects you during the trials when you're looking for boxes, not the final run. That's def be a dreadful one with stay together variator tho.
