Can you just play this solo?
Or is it multiplayer only?

EDIT:
To anyone else asking this question:
-Yes you can play solo. The game is very much designed for that.
-Yes its very scary and very fun
-Great game. Will try multiplayer once i've learned the game better.

Yes you can do every objective that you can with a group, solo. Except the coop walls and gaps that are meant to be for coop

But are people online a bit sweaty or take it too serriously.
I find with many online games the people online get very bossy and want to play in a very specific way so you can't just enjoy stuff at your own pace.

Yeah its like sweaty Gym session if leader dont like it outcome they will leave or turning a game back to the sleep cells if even one player dares to die thats why coop is not fun

not really. the worst thing you will encounter are max levels who know the game really well. which are optional to play with if you dont want to play with skilled players.

True, or they stick around and do nothing.
Yes you can do both except you are required to do solo on final exam and multiplayer on stick together weekly therapy.

Is that some sort of weekly challenge?

You can definitely play Solo but the final exam for releasing a reagent is only Solo can't do it as a group, I've been playing Solo because like Simlec has said it can feel easier depending on how good you are at the game. Now I will say this there are some missions that i HIGHLY recommend you play with teammates because they are just horrible without them. Those missions being:

1. Kill the Snitch
2. Grind the Bad Apples
3. Pervert the Futterman

Kill the Snitch is in my opinion tied with Pervert the Futterman as some of the most annoying missions in the game, Grind the Bad Apples although almost as hard as those two have some leeway because mother gooseberry towards the end is really dumb as you push the cart into the grinder.

These missions in particular are some of the most annoying to do on your own unless you know what you are doing, I have sunk a good 165hr into the game so far, have A+ every mission in Program Genesis and Program X. I am currently working on Program Ultra. It's always these three missions: Kill the Snitch, Grind the Bad Apples and Pervert the Futterman that give me the most trouble on my own, please for you sanity if you do plan to play on your own don't for these specific one's.

As a rather experienced player myself I'd just like to point out that JoJoFan's list feels super random to me. I'm not trying to belittle his/her opinion but it definitely feels like a subjective thing, as in my experience those missions can be easily done solo too, and I've never heard anybody list those ones as not solo-friendly.

The only thing close to a not too solo-friendly experience in this game are the doll-carrying MKs (Miscreants + Children of God) bc there the number of objectives is the same regardless of the number of players, so those just take way more time solo, and feel tedious.

Oh, and Grind the Bad Apples indeed has a bad section for solo, but only if you play without any loadout (bc you challenge yourself for example) or the Naked and Afraid variator is present (which is not currently available in the game).

Btw multiplayer is usually easier than solo imo, because the number of enemies is the same across the board and the fact that there's (usually) slightly more objectives for 3-4 players doesn't really compensate for that. (The Stick Together/Omega variator is a notable exception to this.)
On the other hand MP can be way more chaotic.
