That being said, if you are speedrunning this game, which seems like what the endgame is like, xray is mostly useless. Also knowing that an enemy is somewhere doesn't actually help you get past them. If you had a mine, you just plop it down and do whatever you want.
sure it doesn't do anything to enemies by itself but itll help you not only find things you can use against them, but know exactly who it is and what they're doing without LoS
I've been using the Xray rig since I've started and... I regret investing time into it. Heal, Stun or Blind is just superior in nearly every way. You are absolutely correct.
Being able to prevent an engagement is great, but there's downtime to Xray's effects and players will get caught in the crosshairs of enemies regardless of due diligence. Everyone makes mistakes, and Heal, Stun and Blind help in that inevitability.
I wish there was some respec function. I hate having so many points invested in something that's objectively inferior. It's making my time in this game largely unfun.
It shines especially in the beginning, where you don't have a lot of map awareness, aren't confident to move from place to place fast and need items to sustain injuries / recharge night vision, but as you gain experience on tougher trials, especially from Program X , it really gets outshined by other rigs such as heal or blind. Let me explain.
Whilst it's upgraded ability is good enough that you won't be needing batteries, it's not like you will find yourself in a situation where you wouldn't be able to find any, trapped doors are everywhere. And while it does help in finding items, you shouldn't really need them that much later in the game aside from bricks and bottles, and a heal rig is the equivalent of 4 large medicine bottles + antidotes. Not to mention how much the mine trivializes some of the final encounters, especially in kill the snitch.
TLDR: Good in the beginning to find your way but as you gain experience, awareness and confidence the others might prove more useful.
I think one way to improve it is to show where other required items are, such as gas canisters, the buttons to unlock the secret room, jugs of bleach for feeding, corpses for keys. This would help tremendously especially in later scenarios where you don't get much intel.
It shows a bunch of faint white dots for your team which are very useless since you dont know what are those.
