yes, usually you stick together during the mission and correct the mistakes of the other if he makes one

I'd say for your first time, it's a lot more fun to play just one other person. So you can take your time and have a natural experience without players dragging you through it.

Me and my friend went in just the 2 of us and it took more time but it was really enjoyable and the victory felt earned.

The second time we played with 2 randoms who knew what they were doing on the same trial and we breezed through it by comparison, and looking back it wouldn't have been as exciting if we did that the first time around.

I agree with the above, 2 players is very enjoyable. It's also much more an intimate experience than 3/4 player party for your first run(s) through. It allows you to take in the setting and go at your own pace. 3 or 4 players is also very fun, but for different reasons. It tends to be much more chaotic, especially if everybody is trying to go for fast clears and splitting up to tackle objectives separately.
