cannot add logs for first building

So I have watched a few videos on the game and figured I would try it since it cost the same a pizza and a movie rental. I cannot add logs to build houses. Doing the same things I see in the videos, but when I 'G' the logs to the building they just sit on top the white ghost schematic or the plot of land and nothing updates. Seriously would like to give this game a chance but proving difficult to like.
